My father trained me in childhood, and this has seriously screwed up our relationship
I believe if father bring his son to a boxing club and helps him with initial steps - it is good, but father -trainer - is bad.

I coach at my local amateur boxing club. My son started coming to the gym with me at 7/8 years old. He's 14 now.

I don't enjoy watching him compete at all.

I don't particularly want him to box again but I must admit I do enjoy training him. It's a great way to spend time together.

We have a great relationship but I have seen many father / son relationships damaged due to fathers being over zealous.

I boxed up to the age of 17. I don't see much problem training, sparring and competing up to the age of 16. After 16 the punches become much harder and the fighting becomes more aggressive and hurtful.

If my son just wanted to train in self defences there are martial arts that are far more effective than boxing.

I'm getting my younger sister into boxing, mainly to stay in shape for other sports and for social confidence. I'm just giving her some basics now so she doesn't get frustrated and quit when she gets embarrassed in the gym ;p I don't want her to compete but I'm fine with occasional sparring because it helps with visualization and motivation imo. Turns out she can hit like a truck...it would almost be funny watching her hit girls her own size but there's nothing in boxing for girls. Amateur scene isn't competitive, absolutely no money to be made professionally...if she was a boy I'd try to get her to compete though.

So yes, my kids will all train in boxing to some extent and if the boys want to compete then let em.

I think that it depense. But first of all i think that your son should know what you are going to teach him so that he can say no if he feel pressured. It can be really bad for a child (i think xD) if he feels pushed into a world that he is not ready to enter!
    But good luck with him!

  10. I think all kids benefit from some fight training. Whether it be boxing, karate or whatever.

Never in a million years, it would frighten the Hell out of me. Id have a Heart attack :D. Both of them wanted to, they have been around it all there lives, but I put the block on it, one was exceptional. He used another gym on the sly but I put a stop to it. We talk about it now, He understands why I did it, were close, I worry about the Guys who are not my Flesh and Blood, but worry more about my own.

    Absolutely.
Look -- there are more concussions in most other contact sports -- hockey, football, rugby, wrestling, etc.
    The younger, the better.
