Scotland is well known for producing fiesty scrappers, both in and out of the ring. Some lower weight boxers are among the greatest in their divisions, but one anomaly has always puzzled me. Why has it never produced a decent heavyweight?
Same could be asked of Australia really. They're a good sporting nation with a decently-sized population, yet haven't really produced a heavyweight of note yet.
Ken Shaw appears to be the best they ever had at HW. Shaw faced some decent champions in Mills & Wood**** and had 3 victories against notable American HWs, one at least who had some top wins and distance matches against other American Heavies. I remember someone talking about that victory many years ago at BoxRec or Eastside here... there was also a hopeful in Tommy Bell just before Shaw, he faded out and there was the Black Scot HW Manuel Abrew who was meant to be good, and also Dan McGoldrick years before that. But never very many big boys to be sure from the old Bravehearted bunch. referee Henderson in his book spoke of a Scot HW amature, who he championed and sent word south to London and arranged a meet with this lad and Lavenne or Solomons or someone. Then about 5 weeks later or so Henderson was absolutely 'affronted' that the lackadaisical Big farm boy said "No I haven't made it down, but I'll get to it... to which Henderson replied not under my recommendation you no longer will. but apparently this kid was good. can't remember the guys name.
Well you dont qualify, in your pics you dont look any bigger than me. I may weigh in as a heavy but was a welter/middle.
Yeah, that's my take as well. It's the Haggis. Maybe there's also something in Scotch which stunts growth. Beyond that, I'd hazard a guess that frozen genitals under kilts might have something to do with it, that ice balls don't reproduce large progeny. Maybe better insulated reproductive organs would breed larger offspring. Lack of stature does breed resentment though, which makes them more vicious fighters. But they're not exactly statuesque Vikings.
Well, aside from Goddard and Jackson I can't think of any. I wouldn't call Jimmy Thunder a top heavyweight.
