Are the BBC and ITV to blame for suppressing boxing in the UK?

BBC gave Harrison a ten fight deal for £1m after the Olympics then pulled the plug on Boxing Harrison only took what was on offer who can blame him?

ITV used to show plenty of Boxing back in the day not just Big fight live but on midweek sport special.

BBC had sportsnight & after that finished those of us of a certain age will remember Grandstand showing highlights on BBC1 Saturday afternoons what a joke.Boxing is obviously not a PC sport & the BBC is about as PC as you can get!

 

Actually one million pounds wouldn't buy that much then or now. Frank Bruno fought on BBC One in the early nineties for 1.25 million pounds- for one fight against a no hoper.

 

Exactly for itv or bbc to show the likes of froch v groves or haye v furry it would cost them millions

 

Think your figures for what Bruno got paid for being on telly are way off the mark

 

As for the BBC, why anyone pays their TV tax is beyond me.

There used to be various loopholes but they got closed

 

Yeah, just don't pay it and if in the unlikely event someone comes to your house, don't sign anything and simply tell them to f*ck off and there isn't really anything they can do.

The only reason people get taken to court and fined is because when a license enforcement officer turn up at their door, they assume they have some kind of legal authority (they don't) and agree to sign a form admitting their guilt.

 

Those were the TV rights fees as revealed in Dispatches documentary many moons ago.

 

You could name names till you're blue in the face but at the end of the day it's all about the money, money, money. If the pay-per-view matches switched to freeview they'd be missing out on a lot of money to be made. I understand that, besides the olympic sport part of it, boxing has always been about fighting for money but i think it's gone a bit too far with having the majority of major/all matches being pay-per-view. I cant even afford sky, let alone paying again to see a fight that could potentially be over within 3 minutes.

It is a cheap shot to blame the weakness of the sport on the BBC (or indeed ITV). The reason the sport does not have a input on these channels is down to the capitalist values that drive the sport. If the (big) promoters were prepared to compromise on price, then the sport would be supported by the BBC and ITV.

 

the bbc is rubbish. the only reason it gets so much credit is because it doesn't have ads and left wing people love it.

 

Plus for years the TV license has gone towards funding a bunch of nonces, the BBC is a sick organisation, run by sick people, leeching of a British public who they mostly hate.

 

The left wing (rightly IMO) think the BBC is too right wing actually, its weakness is it lacks neutrality. It is too is obsessed with Capitalism, and is not prepared to give Socialism let alone Marxism a voice...
