James Toney will be in Prizefighter!

Did I hear Toney say Johnny Nelson was one of the greatest Cruisers of all time?

James Toney fighting for £36k in a prizefighter in the York Hall....you couldn't make it up how sad

 

Would be real sad if he got put out in the first round which at this stage of his career I don't think is outwith the realms of possibility.

 

He has no chance of winning PrizeFighter.

The fact he's even allowed to take part in the tournament is shocking in itself, the guy should not be passed fit to box in this country and the last time i checked PrizeFighter was not an unlicensed boxing event.

He can't get licensed in the majority of American boxing states as it's clear to any one he's suffering from brain trauma, if anything happens to Toney in this tournament then those involved will have blood on their hands and alot to answer for.

 

I am pretty sure Eddie Hearn will have a bullet proof contract drawn up where you participate at your own risk.

The thing about Toney is that he sometimes speaks clearer than others , if you watch the question and answer bit he did on ringside he is very easy to understand.

At 45 it will be interesting to see how he does and whether there is much left , just hope he does'nt get badly ko'd or hurt

That is the prize that whoever wins will take away. Don't kid yourself into thinking that Toney will only earn that much if he wins.

 

I was at Wildcard during the period Ben Dunne was there. I haven't read his book, but the passage you describe is correct. Toney would come in every day and it would be bedlam. The atmosphere would change for the worse. ****** Fortune was Freddie's S&C guy back then and he would leave the gym until Toney and his entourage had left, as he couldn't stand the guy.

Toney in the ring would abuse his sparring partners without let up. Much of it was tongue in cheek, bravado, but until you got to know the guy it was impossible to know.

A boxing gym such as Wildcard is a pretty raw environment. The language is colourful and political correctness does not apply.

Two things I can add to your comment:

i) the boxer Toney had the beef with and involved him threatening to shoot was Ola Afolabi

ii) Toney is without any shadow of a doubt the most skilled fighter I ever saw train at Wildcard, and I saw many. His talent and skill back then was simply sublime. It makes it all the more tragic to see how he's ended up.

Prizefighter is obviously making money for Matchroom hence why they are still putting the shows on. The casuals love it.

 

Sure Toney slurs his speech, but if you look at some early interviews of him, he sounded very similar to how he sounds now. It might've gotten worse lately, but I think its largely down to how he speaks too.
