See this "is he American or other" topic on here often. Try to understand it like this, when a first generation foreigner lives in America they are brought completely foreign within their home. Their foreign language, foods, customs etc are all practiced, available, and taught. Their parents know mostly their countries of origins habits and so that's what they are raised by.

It's not until they step out their home that they are influenced by America. We are really split culturally, and the more or less we associate with American's or less determines which way that split leans. It's not a "hate America or not proud thing" it's just a familiarity thing. For those who still have trouble grasping, watch Gangs of New York, whites of first generation or foreign were much the same way.
