There is word that 2 young German prospects Edmund Gerber (heavyweight) & Dustin Dirks (light heavyweight) have been retired. They both lost their last match (Gerber to Chisora) Their promoter has yet to confirm this, but it's a big loss for German boxing,
Where did this word come from then? I think Dirks has only lost one fight, Gerber has lost just two, so unless they are medically unfit I don't know why they would jack it in. Move to another promoter maybe but not to quit. They are both still young. Anyway, I think there are probably enough heavyweights and light heavyweights still fighting in Germany that will fill the void they leave - if there is any truth to this thread.
They were both destined to hit their ceiling anyway. Gerber could not rely on judges to keep him winning on the C level, and Dirks was pretty much finished when he couldnt beat journeyman Tomas Adamek.:yep They could both become Owen Beck types until they simply lose all punch resistance and will to win. It's a living, but not much in the way of a reitrement plan. Or, they could go on to have successful careers and use their boxing name recognition to bolster their opportunities. :think
I believe Sauerland kinda recommend retirement to both of them. I think Sauerland had no interest to keep on working with them when each of them has no real future in boxing..
Gerber doesn't surprise me one bit, but I didn't see the Dirks retirement coming. Edmund is nothing more as journeyman level fighter, who relied on corrupt scoring to build up a very tainted record.
Possible as well. If so, then it is actually kinda admirable, as they could easily send them out as opponents somewhere with those records.
They already had. The loss to Cherviak and draw with Adamek (the Czech one, not the Pole) were a humiliating wake-up call to Dirks after feasting on cans and having it all easy the whole ride up. Likewise for Gerber both Sprott encounters (the first time he got a gift stoppage, highly controversial, hence the rematch...in which he got even more thoroughly exposed) and the savaging by Chisora just drove the point home just how mediocre he is. Neither was going to improve much this far along.
