I'm fairly new to boxing and after the froch groves fight I've seen some talk of standing 8 counts.

In my opinion they seem a perfect way to deal with the controversy we saw last night.
Froch would get a 10-8 round and the ref would get a longer opportunity to assess groves condition, rather than getting caught up in the moment and making a split second decision.

    What do you think?

Glenn Mcrory said they aren't used in the pro game? Why not?

Although I'm sure there was one in the Price Thompson 2 fight? :think

You're right, there was one in the Price Thompson fight.

i think even a standing 8 would have been harsh on groves last night.

Froch/Groves was a perfect example where the standing 8 count would have worked.

Going down on a knee when hurt is ok, providing that you feel you are hurt, and that you know the ref is going to stop the fight. How often can a boxer know that ???? never

It could have been open to abuse by referees, but it would still be an improvement on last nights stoppage.

    No.

That was a mandatory 8 count because Price fell into the ropes.

Bouma is correct. The referee in the Price fight deemed the ropes to have prevented a knockdown and thus issued a count. A true standing eight-count does not exist here.

We used to have them. In general, they get in the way of the action and shouldn't be used.

However, I would support a "1 each per fight" policy, if it could maybe help to stop early stoppages. When someone is on the ropes and not firing back... I wouldn't want to see them used all the time i.e. "1 each per fight" doesn't mean they would have to be used every fight.

However, the main problem with early stoppages is just British refs and that needs to be sorted out.
