Is Froch's resume now better than Calzaghe's?

Rubbish. Any Super Middleweight today would be proud of beating the 2008 version of Hopkins no matter how narrowly he did it. At the time Hopkins was the Light Heavyweight King and #4 P4P . That's a great scalp to have on your resume any way you look at it.

 

Ward was a nobody until he beat Kessler. Nobody anywhere, any time had been calling for Calzaghe to fight Ward before that. In fact, Ward was the kind of name that Kessler would have mocked relentlessly for fighting if it had happened outside of the Super Six. Calzaghe had been retired for the better part of seven months by that time. You cant duck someone if your retired.

Froch was offered a fight in 2006 but turned it down because he said he wasn't ready. When Froch said he was ready Calzaghe was contractually tied up to a fight with Manfredo then moved on to fight Kessler and Hopkins and Jones. Kessler and Hopkins was infinitely more credible opponents than Froch at the time and Jones was a much bigger payday. So Froch had the opportunity to fight Calzaghe but refused and stepped up to the world scene too late to force Calzaghe to fight him.

 

Nobody. And he never will because as game as he is, he simply isn't good enough.

Kessler was clearly not prime when Froch beat him. Kessler beat Froch at the tail end of his prime. Kessler's prime was was 2004/05 to 2009/10. Kessler was three or so years out of his prime when Froch beat him.

You said Calzaghe showed no interest in fighting Ward as Ward emerged onto the World scene. I'll quote your own words back to you:

"he clearly wasn't interested in engaging Ward once he was emerging as a world challenger" and that he did this: "DESPITE fighting a series of less than able challengers for ten years"

That wasn't said in the hypothetical "what Calzaghe would have done" argument, it was said in the tone of "this is what Calzaghe did".

The fact is that the primary reason Calzaghe showed no interest in fighting Ward was because he was retired, and Calzaghe had always planned for his retirement to be a perminant one, and having achieved the limitedly ambitious goals he set for himself he had retired on his own terms and at peace with his decision. There was no reason whatsoever for him to show any kind of interest in a fight with Ward unless he planned to come out of retirement and that was never going to happen.

 

A close debatable win over a great fighter is still a win. Interestingly enough its become more debatable with the passage of time as in the immediate aftermath the majority thought Calzaghe the worthy winner and Hopkins finally washed up and on his way out, but as Hopkins embarrased Pavlik and went on to reclaim his place at the top and still competes at the highest level today while Calzaghe bowed out of the sport after less than a year people re-evaluated the fight and started to see the merit of Hopkins won argument.

Regardless, my point was about how big a name Hopkins was to have on ones resume as opposed to how close the fight and contentious the decision may have been. And since you agreed with me on that point, kind of at any rate, I see no reason to address this issue further.

 

It was a very close fight and depends on what you score for. But it's irrelevant as Froch against that version of Hopkins wouldn't be a close fight.

It has UD Hopkins written all over it.

I felt Calzaghe did shy away from fighters when they were seen as dangerous in a similar way that Floyd has done and didn't conduct his career in a way you could celebrate. But his resume is still better and h2h he would take Froch to school.

Resume its clearly Froch, he has taken more risks and I feel if Froch was in the same position as Joe was around the time Dawson and Pavlik were around Froch would have taken the fights, however h2h Calzaghe was the better fighter

 

I remember watching something about Carl on terrestrial TV in England. I think it was reality sort of show where they followed him around before a fight.

During this show Carl Phones Joe and asks about a fight. All Joe says is '' Bring the money and we will get it on, It's all about the money. You know that ''

At that time Joe was chasing big money fights. Carl was a nobody at the time.
