Looked to be one to watch when he stopped the abnormally durable Page, but he's not really stepped up since then in terms of quality of opposition. He's got talent...but ambition is questionable at this point.

His record is padded as heck. Perez and Solis are both better, not to mention Pulev...

here's the post of a member from several years ago, about Ortiz and Zach Page(who's been in the ring with both) comparing him to Pulev:

ortiz should fight rodriguez next. then the winner could step up to the next level of pointless hype, and face a winner of wilder fury.

    Thanks for the insight.

I agree that Ortiz isn't at that level and Pulev would beat him without much trouble. That doesn't mean there aren't fights out there for Luis, of course, but even against cans I haven't seen him perform at a level which suggests top contender.

Only seen this Ortiz fight Jerry "Buffet" Butler. If it turns out he can take a punch and has no real stamina issues, I think he would beat Mitchell by KO, easily, although that doesn't really say much. Arreaola would depend on whether Arreola had been training or stuffing his fat face, probably same for Chisora too, but I think both have the experience to beat this guy. Pulev on the other hand is hard to say, he struggles with southpaws, but is a cunning boxer, uses the jab well if nothing else and can take a punch, I think Pulev could beat this guy. These heavyweights from **** hole countries usually get hyped up but they've never fought anything near the calibre to get them somewhere and once they step up the majority get exposed very quickly, I don't see anything here to think this guy is something special.

I really don't know why he's #2 contender for the WBA.
He's also on my Watch list, but he hasn't fought any decent yet. I'd like to see what he does versus Solis or another solid fighter. He's 34 ans till hasn't stepped up.

I didn't realise he was that old?! Oh he's ****ing useless then, can't see him doing anything but possibly getting fed to Wilder and billed as a "live" opponent. Reminds me of another Audley "A-****" Harrison, but a wanky Cuban version.

    Never seen Ortiz.

But Mike Perez would absolutely F up the light hitting wild brawler Chisora, probably Arreola, no doubt Mitchell.

So because he is 34 he is useless ?
I could give you a few good fighters older than him.

Ortiz is really good. He's got the skills, mentality, physical capabilities and the ambition to achieve something. He's not another undedicated Cuban- he stays in great shape, and he looks like a 90s throwback HW.

He's been taking it really easy on most opponents he fought so far (If you've seen him fight, you'll realize this...). The fact that he faced mediocre opposition is due to promotional issues- any logically thinking person understands that its not his fault. And the Zack Page fight was his 3rd pro bout...

Golden Boy said they'll give him a big undercard in 2014 if he KO's Gonzales- he did it in two minutes... I think he's going to cause some trouble.

His manager said Ortiz back in jan/feb on a GB "a big card" a WBA fight in june (Chagaev)? and maybe fight Wladimir Klitschko late next year.
