Froch is right: no instant rematch, he won by TKO

Groves started great but shot his load too early, he gassed himself out. He fought incredibly stupid from the mid-rounds on, he ditched his gameplan and thought he could trade toe-to-toe with Froch. Then he found out he couldn't handle an all out war and was lucky to be saved by the ref. The extra 10-20 seconds some are asking for can be just one punch too much, we don't need to see fighters to take unnecessary damage. You can't expect to stand in front of your opponent, take 20 punches with your guard down, stumble all over the place like a drunkard and expect to stay in the fight. A ref is there to protect fighters who put themselves in potentially dangerous situations and that's what Groves did.

Groves can bounce back from this, if he learns that he has to pace himself and protect himself at all times. Groves should take a couple of tune-ups to implement the lessons he (hopefully) learned in this fight.

If the fight happens then for Froch to earn the huge payday, not because Groves 'deserves it'. Groves threw the fight away that he already had in the bag, he deserves nothing at this point.

Groves wasn't gassed out at all, re-watch the fight. Both men were fading which is to be expected, but neither were totally ****ed - not by any stretch of the imagination.

There must be a rematch, anything other than that for Froch is a joke. He was getting pinged about with the right hand throughout the fight.. the stoppage was a disgrace.

It ain't a popular opinion but I'm very much with you on this. Multiple rewatchings show that while Groves was very sharp over the first 7, Froch was landing nearly as much and probably actually harder but was going more to the body.

FWIW Groves actually probably gave himself the best chance by throwing everything in early when his speed advantage would be the greatest, and his game-plan nearly worked, but ultimately he fell short.

Each time I rewatch the stoppage (and whilst I still feel the ref should have waited till there was a more definitive conclusion) I become more certain that Groves had next to no chance of seeing out the rest of the round.

For the final 30 seconds, although he briefly managed to get his legs under him, he is basically out on his feet.

Groves has shown himself to be an excellent fighter, but at the end of the day he lost this fight (though not through want of trying) and in reality has yet to prove himself at the highest level with an actual victory.

Really do not see how Groves was "out on his feet" ?

Earlier in the round he had caught Froch with a cracking shot which once again shook him, Froch then took the upper hand in the round and did try to stick it on Groves... a few clean shots landed but if you actually look closely a lot of shots where scrappy and scuffed the side of his head or where hitting gloves.

Both men were tiring, but neither were shattered. When the referee jumped in, Groves still had his hands up, was moving and was firing back with shots. His legs were under him, he wasn't jelly-legged or doing an Amir Khan impersonation... it was an awful stoppage.

Froch was hurt more during the fight than Groves was in the exchange which caused the stoppage.

He was. Watch him closely from round six on.

It's understandable: his whole fighting style was burning masses of energy whilst Frochs lazy upright stance is almost made to conserve energy and whilst Groves' headhunting was drawing all the attention Froch was bullying away at Groves' body throughout the fight.

In the early rounds his posture has every muscle tensed and his reflexes are needle sharp. By six his hands are starting to droop, he's starting to fight more open mouthed and his wide stance is starting to lose some of it's tension. He does rally somewhat in seven, but I read that as his last throw of the dice. 8 is Frochs first clear round and GG is noticeably slowing and by 9 Froch is actually able to pause and line up the haymaker (almost exactly 30 seconds from the end) that initiates the finishing sequence.

It's helpful if you try watching the fight with the sound off to avoid being influenced by the near hysterical commentary.

froch has always prided himself on fighting anyone, and like Kessler, has always backed it up
it'll be interesting to see if he can look in the mirror over the coming days and be true to himself or not, because there is no doubt he needs to rematch groves

Rematch should be made. Despite being one of the few who saw a relatively even fight, the ending was deeply unsatisfactory and there's massive interest (and a good few £s) in the proposed Wembly / Stamford Bridge event.

Spot on in all comments but especially this...

I have watched it multiple times and in all honesty I don't think the stoppage was controversial at all...first time I saw it yes...after multiple rewatches definitely a good stoppage...GG was out on his feet big time...its undeniable...the ref caught home on his way down pretty much after he staggered into Froch...

You do make some valid points but we'll have to agree to disagree which is what forums are all about.

I was at the arena last weekend, have watched the fight back since and have seen the stoppage umpteen times and Groves was still VERY much in the fight.

Both had slowed down, and yes in the 9th Froch did hurt Groves but Groves had Froch hurt numerous times through out the fight. Can you say Groves was more hurt in the 9th than Froch was in the 1st?

Like I said, both were slowing down. Groves had expended energy constantly beating Froch in the jab exchanges throwing flush right hands on Froch and Froch had taken (to his credit as well) some big shots but was still standing, say what you want about the man but he's as tough as they come.

Now if the referee thought Groves was in deep trouble, a standing count should have been issued - as the IBF regulates. He was however; still standing, still moving his body and head, still firing shots back and not long before this sequence had caught Froch with a cracking shot himself. Instead, Groves had got himself away from the ropes and Foster took it upon himself to jump in and wave the fight off.

We'll never know what would of happened. Put a gun to my head and ask me the outcome, I'd say that Groves would of gone on to win the fight. Others might say different but that's my take on it.
