I plan to train in one of these two arts, Muay thai or western boxing. The reason I don't want to do muay thai is because I heard it does a lot of wear and tear on your body maybe your joints, and can cause you problems when you get older, so I thought boxing may be better to train in. Plus boxing is much cheaper. My question is how long does it usually take to train in boxing before you become fight proficient. I heard muay thai takes about 6months to a year before you can handle yourself well in a fight. Now, I want to know how long it usually takes in boxing. To tell the truth, if it takes too long like wing chun ( years of training before you can actually apply the skills without getting whooped) I may just take up muay thai. But to be honest I think boxing would be better for my body. So how long does it usually take before you are fight proficient in boxing for self defense situations against an untrained opponent? How many months or years does it take? I would greatly appreciate the help from the boxers.
Does it matter which one you can get the hang of first? Why not just train in the one you enjoy doing? You'll never get good enough to get a match in a sport you dont enjoy because you wont go to train with dedication haha As for the joint concerns, they're both combat sports mate your joints and body will undoubtedly take some punishment so i'd see your doctor to get advice on this before you try it I enjoy both, but my passion is fists-only boxing
That's your opinion and I appreciate the reply, but could you answer the main question too? You kind of dodged the main question. I'm sure I would enjoy both. Maybe one more than the other, but I'm not just doing it for fun. It's fpr self defense although I'm sure both sports are fun regardless. And good excersize. The main question was, how long does training in boxing ususally take before you are fight proficient? Muay thai takes about 6 months to a year, so I was wondering what it was for boxing. The help would be appreciated.
I didnt dodge it, it's just impossible to answer... It depends on how much of a knack for it you have, dedication, how good the gym is and how well you perform at that particular gym regardless of the sport Anywho, i'd say you'd get the basics of boxing down first, but thai boxing is more technique than sheer physical endurance so... are you a technique guy or a fitness guy?
thanx for the answer. Ill say Ill go with muay thai since its more technique oriented. I appreciate the help. I needed to hear that. Muay thai sounds more appealing. maybe after many years of muay thai and bjj, Ill get some boxing training under my belt to get good with my fists. But I think Il start with muay thai.
Yeah Muay Thai is quite good fun, they do thai boxing lessons on occasion at my boxing gym and i do really enjoy it but i guess i'm more of a fist fighter lol Good luck in your training
Go out and try both and work out what suits you best. The worst thing that can happen is you'll get fit during the decision making process. A very important part of any fight training is finding the best possible trainer. Start visiting local gyms and do your homework on the trainers as well.
This. Nobody can put a timeline on your training, anyone that tries is talking bull****. It could take months for you to be at a decent level to spar or you may never even get to that point at all.
I'm an ex MT fighter that's also been a sparring partner for Thai MT fighters who've transitioned to boxing. What weight are you? Where do u live? By the way, who ever told u the 6 months thing was round bend, it usually takes years to just get comfortable with the basic techniques of the clinch....
Hi, I'm 5 foot 9 weigh 260 lbs. I'm out of shape but I just lost 20 lbs and plant to to lose about 90 more. I don't plan to train until next year when I have lost all the weight because I fight like a girl right now because of the weight I gained and it would be embarrassing. I live in Memphis, TN.
I also plant to train krav maga first, Because after I graduate from college I might move out the city. So I thought I'd just train muay thai after I graduate, so I don't end up having to start over.
Depends on how much your willing to work on technique. Muai thai has more strikes to learn but boxing has variations on the punches as well, small changes that you use depending on where your opponent is and whatnot. Both are technique oriented. If your willing to shadowbox each day and have the discipline to do it youll progress well in either in that respect. Do what you like, try them both. And btw both are hard on your body. If your looking to keep your body all pristine n **** dont do either.
boxign is nothing but technique. i cant believe someone would suggest otherwise this forum is an abortion btw the best muay thai fighters make like 20k a fight in thailand, the best boxers make 8 figures so
well, with that said. I guess Ill do boxing and muay thai. Screw krav maga. Ill do boxing while Im in college, for the next 2 years. Continue boxing and take up BJJ, when I graduate, then Ill switch to muay thai after I think Im a beast with my hands while continuing BJJ. Then Ill do kyokushin karate and judo after Im done with that. Ill be a very deadly weapon after all that, Im sure.
