Dempsey, good luck to your fighter this weekend! I know this may have been asked before but I am lazy and don't feel like searching the thread for it :). What is the best way to scout talent? And could signing up on boxrec be a benefit to a manager?

    S. attend shows amateur and pro and talk to people. Signing up on boxrec leads nowhere. Nobody bothers with it, it's strictly for the newbies who like to see their name.

Well last night saw James Kirkland(33) fight Glen Tapia(23) great fight for the fans and it was Kirkland's career on the line at a competitive level kudos to him.He couldn't of planned it better when you hear us older fight fans talk about experience (age) being a key this was a perfect example. We have a saying here in gyms where sparring let alone fights go this way 'he was old manned in there'.

For Tapia fought the wrong fight inexperience showed big time ALL his team planning this fight if the game plan was to fight fire with fire frankly suicidal tactics.

You do what your opponent LEAST wants you to do Tapia & his team made the greatest mistake of all fought to the opponents strength.Tapia at 23 lives to fight another day you hope the folly of youth & a management team that by the sounds of their cornerwork gave their fighter little direction & little use of any experience they have?

Two lessons from the frontlines. I had a guy fighting in Atlantic City who was 11-0 fighting Toka Khan Clary 9-0. Clary was favored to romp my guy, I told my guy this is your opportunity you are getting the largest purse of your career go in and nevermind that he was the house fighter and a terrific amateur. I told him to train like he never did before and fight like it was a world title fight cos the other guy probably saw that my guy was no great amateur and had never fought anybody, so to Clary it was just another fight
while to my guy he knew this was his chance. Clary won a 6rd dec 57-55 on all cards, but Clary was lucky to last the 4th rd he was down twice the last time nobody thought he would make it, he did and used his speed to win the fight. In losing my guy won now he will have more opportunities. The other fight was in Texas and it was a big mistake on my guys part, he took a fight with a 2-1 guy who was a '40pdr, my guy is a 30pdr and was 2-0, 2ko's both in the first rd. The trainer took the fight without letting me know anything about it. The opponent was too strong and too big for my guy, who lost a dec and was down in the first. I told the kid, trainers are just supposed to train not make fights. The trainer told me it was his fault I told him that it was well and good that he accepted the blame but who paid for his mistake the kid now he has a loss 3 fights into his career. Trainers are just that trainers and should keep it that way. My two other guys were unlucky also but in another way, their fight was canceled cos of a snow storm in Oklahoma.

M as always good insight, Tapia's game plan was to try to catch Kirkland cold, Cos Kirkland is a slow starter. two things the trainer should have thought about, Tapia is not that kind of a puncher and two that first rd set the pace of the fight and Tapia was in with a beast and he had to fight Kirklands fight.

Tapia certainly woke Kirkland up in the first marked him up & fired him up.He expended a lot of energy but set a pace he couldn't keep with you on that.

The two best points in the fight for Tapia for me was when he was up on his toes using lateral movement & catching Kirkland on the way in.Matador v Bull springs to mind
when you fight a out & out banger like Kirkland tough as nails but poor footwork.Frustrate & negate the key for me.

Shame about you fighters postponements only had to see the NFL crazy conditions!Would like to know what you guys the other side of the pond think about the Burns-Crawford fight?

Crawford to me technically very good but Burns has a hell of a lot of heart & will try to pressure him many here are saying it will be straightforward for Crawford not so sure myself.

I disagree with Camacho beating him. Floyd loves to fight flat footed mexican fighters. The fighter right now that I believe would give Floyd Problems is Erislandy Lara.

I agree with Lara but there is no money in fighting him so the chances of fighting Mayweather are slim and none. Camacho was not flatfooted or Mexican. Hector Camacho sr had the skills and the speed to give Mayweather fits if not beat him. Watch some of his early fights you might change your mind.

Guys here is some holiday reading for you that you might find interesting, google this article 'The Pimping of a Mexican World Champion'. It involves the Oscar Dela Hoya - Yori Boy Campas fight.

Read a few bits previously about the Dela Hoya v Campas fight mostly in books they 'hint' at foul play but hold back fully from what has been put online.Campas a real warrior to clear $74k against a fighter getting $11m large joke...welcome to big time boxing where justice reflects life the power of the $ rules.

The line being Campas signed a contract believing it was $1,000,000 instead of $100,000
again it is online that is also on that site good read.

On writing checks that don't cash.....Broner at the weekend wrote checks with his mouth that his fist's couldn't cash. It's the season of giving I suggest a set of scales for him this Xmas because he is no 147lb fighter at the top,top level.

Maidana gave him a large slice of humble pie which he would do well to digest Pretty Boy Floyd mark 2 he ain't.

This was a good read. Just a small amount of info on how dirty the business can be. As a manager, how does one know if your fighter is about to sign up for a fixed fight and knows it? I am going into the game honest (I know folks hear that a lot) and don't want any part of that crap. How would I encourage my fighters not to be involved in this type of crap?

hey man, i'm tino. i'm 26 from montreal quebec. i've been training boxing for six years. i don't really have big dreams like a middleweight title or anything, my real dream is to fight pro though and just have the opportunity to make boxing my profession. my real goal is to bridge the gap between martial art and boxing. i want to add aspects of eastern training to boxing that could make any boxer better. if this is possible, i'm not even sure but i've already done some karate too and my hands are tough as hell. i broke them several times and they dont hurt or nag, they're healthy. i even asked a white crane teacher, he said they're perfect.

i have a lot of questions. i'll start with one.

how many hours can a boxer possibly wish to train in days, weeks, months. i heard mike tyson trained 50-55 hours a week. i am still not sure if the person was lying. lol

shed some light on this, if we chat more i'll have more questions that you can answer.

    PEACE

Your hands aren't tough. You probably don't even dip them in petrol...
