I'm a beginner and in my gym we have the speed bag that a trainer said 'heavyweights used' Look at all the sizes here. http://www.ringtocage.com/speed-bag/ Which should I get as a beginner? I'm thinking the 10inch. I heard that the smaller bags you tend to get past after a couple of days.
wow what an insight into your knowledge... speed bags are waste of time... they donn help develop rhythm and timing or anything... not at all
Boxing-wise no. Playing guitar will teach me rhythm, also. Will I improve my boxing ability from playing the guitar?
For the purpose of a speed bag! hand speed, hand-eye co-ordination, keeping hands up, balance of feet heavier / bigger bags more for strength/stamina
Best speed bags are Title bags and the second best option is the Lonsdale authentic leather bag. I don't know this from experience but i recently got a speed bag and extensively researched them before getting one. Also it has really helped my punch accuracy, punch speed and punch fluidity. I think it is essential for anyone to have either speed bag or a double end bag as punch accuracy and timing is very important.
Hand speed is very specific. To improve the speed of a punch, or any other movement for that matter, you have to teach your body that movement with a hell of a lot of repetitions of that specific movement. Your body gets more and more efficient at the movement after thousands of repetitions. Higher efficiency = greater speed. When you punch a speed bag you're not using actual punch technique. So no, it won't improve hand speed. You may think it does, but it's more along the lines of your useful boxing training i.e shadow boxing, heavy bag, sparring etc is increasing hand speed via technique repetition which will help with your use of the speed bag. In other words your boxing training is helping you increase your speed bag ability not the speed bag helping your boxing ability. Double end bag would be a far better choice. Sparring, shadow boxing, double end bag, heavy bag, during any of those (and many other parts of training) you'll be keeping your hands up. If this is all you use the speed bag for then okay... What? If you're referring to balance in general then again, there's far better choices. Strength increase? No. You're also not going to get much of a stamina increase from the speed bag.
