Who said this before the recent Sturm-Barker fight?

“Sturm is the real quality operator here. If age hasn’t caught up with him and he can sustain a good pace round after round, Sturms phenomenal jab, airtight defence, size, strength, crisp hard punches, chin and mental and physical toughness and guile will see him beat Barker.”

Well OK, I did.

But anyone with eyes in their head could have. The real question I am asking is who didn’t say it, and why not? Lets confine it to the Sky broadcast team for now. I watched the pre-fight build up on Sky incredulously as one “boxing expert” after another on Sky blithely dismissed Sturms chances against Darren.
I watched Johnny Nelson, Carl Froch, Kell Brook, Jim Watt – all world class pros, 2 ex and 1 current champion, one after the other say without hesitation that Darren would win. Not one considered the many very obvious weaknesses Darren has or the strengths of Sturm. You could almost hear them click their heels and salute as each one in turn stood to attention and trotted out the “party line --- “Barker to win”.

To keep it simple lets look at two options – either:

1. I am a bigger boxing expert than multiple world champs and the entire Sky team ----or
2. Some factor OTHER than boxing expertise affects the Sky teams judgement.
(Hint: its probably not option 1!!)

I have been seeing this sort of behaviour from British sports media types all my life. What are the causes of this phenomenon? This extraordinary blind, blinkered view of things by people who should, and in fact DO know better?

1. Were the sky team blinded by their “union jack” blinkers?
2. Did the union jack hats they so obviously wear fall down over their eyes?
3. Were they “toeing the company line for Sky”? Being good “company men”? Watching their backs with Sky for the next paycheck?
4. Is it a cultural thing with English/British people – blind jingoistic loyalty to their own? Etc etc??

Discuss……..

Font colour Bro......

But i know what you mean! The way sky hype fighters and dismiss others is a joke. Wonder why they are always so bias eh? Hmmmm.

Sky will have you beleive Eubank was the best SMW of the 90's
They told us Tyson was a prime animal when he fought Lewis
They had friends of mine beleive Hatton would beat Mayweather

Before Froch Groves, a family memeber said, froch will hammer him, hes the world champion and Groves has never fought at that level. Which is true! But when i mentioned Andre Ward is the best, they would have none of it because Sky never mentioned him.....

They currently have the pundits talking about how Khan would cause Mayweather problems

Yeh  I think i was even thinking, Audley mite do this!!!

Its all what Hearn tells them. There is a thread somewhere but when Hearn signed Frampton, he was a 'future star' etc etc. Now hes not with them he never gets mentioned and has been dropped down the rankins!! :patsch

It's only like when the World Cup & European championships are on, because they don't have the tv rites (even though it's probably the biggest worldwide sports tournament on the planet) it hardly gets a mention.

No need for the "discuss ......" at the end, it's a forum.

I'd also say it's an English media thing. They just have to be the best at everything.

Not long ago we had Joe Hart as the best keeper in the world ........... where do I start on that.

And I'll assume England are right up there with the favourites to win the WC right? ............ Laughable.

It happens in Scotland too, but not on same scale as the English media thats for sure.

And Sky are very much involved in the getting the message across.

Did you need to make a whole new thread about you getting a prediction right?

i am not sure what you expect?
sky tv to openly criticise boxers they subsidise and have a stake in?i dare say thats bad for all concerned...
However i was more than a bit miffed after the Froch/Groves fight when the panel were outraged then after the ad break most had a different opinion (eg not refs fault, frochs fault, etc) as if during the break there was instrictions to toe the party line....only big Glenn had the nuts to keep his opinion

well tbh I expect a bit more outrage from boxing fans - people like you tdf!

I mean they apparently have Frampton ranked 8th or something, just cos he is not a "house" fighter. Dont you have a problem with that sort of corruption in the sport you love? I do.
