hey guys iv been training for a solid year now. at the start of next year im looking to start fighting in the amateurs so im taking my training pretty seriously.. at my work there is a local gym who we have kind of an agreement with that we get free trials and cheap memberships to use there gym

i was thinking "if its free i might aswell use it" but im just wondering if weight lifting at all is good for boxing training or will it hinder me? im about 5 foot 9 last time i weighed myself i was unfit at 65 kilos my body has changed a bit since then but im adamant that i would love to fight down at featherweight (need to reach 57.2kg) i was thinking of using the weights mainly to train my legs but i would love to work out my whole body casually

Go for it mate, and take advantage of having a free gym. Intelligent weight training (by that I mean not bodybuilding, no disrespect to builders) will benefit practically any sporting endeavour, and of course life in general, and makes your physique look good too. :good

To be a better boxer you first and foremost have to be boxing.

But when you already train 4/5 times a week boxing then additional training with weights can benefit you.

Dont expect to be a good boxer by boxing twice a week and doing weights 4 times a week.

But the other way around does benefit you. Also go running though.

From my own experience I like to work big muscle groups. Not the isolation exercises since they mess with the coordination of your punches.

    This.....
Always prioritise boxing and use weight training as your training supplement.
Weight training is great in the general physical preparation phase i.e. no upcoming fights under 8 weeks, but I would focus solely on boxing training and use maintenance weight training if you have an upcoming fight.

Using compound, multijoint exercises like squats, cleans, push press are effective exercises. Keep flawless technique plus vary your weight \repetition scheme to provide varied training stimulus.

Check out Ross boxing for more detailed weight training for striking athletes.

    Thanks

Boxers can benefit from lifting weights but not so much the low rep heavy weight type. I think things like Spartacus 2.0 and Grappler's Circuit workouts would be OK for a boxer ( you can easily find videos of these on the internet ). Just be careful not to overtrain. PerformanceU's channel has some good ones; Metabolic Plate, the farmer's walk ones, particularly the one with single arm dumbbell split jerks and the barbell fat loss/ conditioning complexes.
