Or should i say most recent:-(

I've decided to watch some of his fights again, in particular from taylor 1 onwards

The decline from the hard punching, high volume, body punching, strong pressure fighter to slow, margarito clone was so rapid it's shocking. even still he did well against martinez, I had him only a round down at the time of the cut which killed the fight and he was coming on so strong

Do people on here forget what a great fighter he was considering his relative lack of versatility?

he kinda reminds me of an american froch- a guy who achieved (or at least could have achieved) so much more than his ability merited and always remembered his roots, even to his detriment i.e. keeping loew as head trainer for so long

I know this thread is a bit irrelevant to current affairs but i just figured it's best to remember what a great prospect kelly was on a night when another american champion is fighting

Alcohol has defeated many men.....having said that, Cheers to Pavlik's retirement....it was the best decision he could've made....

start with his run up to the title. knocked out zuniga, mckart, zertuche and miranda. Hell Miranda is one of the best fights of that year. None had been stopped. He was a machine for a small window in time.

Yeah I mean he acually achived somethng only a few men in history has done so I wouldn't be too dissapointed.

A thing I remeber from that period was that he changed his training schedule alot before the hopkins fight and I acually think that was one of the many things that went wrong.

If something has worked for you and granted you the lineal title then why would you change it?

he was a mess after he won the title. some people used to post on here who were pretty close with his camp and it was pretty bad. they did a good job of covering it up but it was pretty bad.

got overrated after he won the title because he put asses in seats. underrated on his way up to the title.

miranda was supposed to destroy him and manny steward was literally laughing at him before the taylor fight. you call that overrating?

you know not what you speak and are blinded by hate :deal

His fight with Miranda was awesome! Loved every minute of it!
His decline started after he lost to Hopkins, guess he just got depressed and couldn't stop getting into the liquor cabinet..

I agree that he was under rated if anything on his way up to the title. He did beat one good fighter as taylor and thats it. He was fighting in weak era of middleweight and only fight what mathered on his short reign was aa fight which didnt happen. I think pavlik was strong champ even looked pretty limited to me.

I remember finnish amin asikainen was fighting at same time as ebu champ when kelly was reigning and even finnish boxing experts thought they would been worrying the health of asikainen if he and pavlik were in the same ring. What I mean with this pavlik was well respected.

AA was taking the all too familiar 'german path of least resistance' and wasn't on the international map
at least he stepped up for the SMW tournament

It's really hard to say what Pavlik could have accomplished if he wasn't on the booze. Not saying he would have gone down as an ATG, but he was a quality fighter with dangerous power at 160.

    Alcoholism is no joke.

i agree that it wasn't the strongest mw era…that's for sure. but w/ martinez out and jr (who i never rated anyways) at cw…it was a much stronger division than it is now. i mean…there's 3G and then nothing better than what pavlik beat. i'd take prime taylor and prime miranda over anyone fighting at mw today not named 3G. and it was also how he beat the guys on his way up. i remember the zertuche fight and kellerman wasn't even sure pavlik could create "buzz" with the fight. zertuche was undefeated and got absolutely put to sleep.
