No offense Klompton, but if you go out of your way to spend THAT kind of time and money on something you know damn well is going to end up thrown all over the internet anyway, then that's on you. Stop acting like it's some tireless service you're doing for the world at large. You do all this because you're into it and really like doing it, so stop acting like a victim. If all the boxing nerds want to hoard these films so no one else can see them like they're Gollum or something, like "keepers of the flame" or some ****, then pardon us for not valuing THEIR viewpoint. It's not like these films are their creation. It's not any kind of intellectual property, so if it was their intent to utilize this film (which wasn't created for THEM, mind you) in some way, then get on with it. Otherwise, don't ***** when genuine fans find a way to spread the word and get this stuff out there. Especially when the people in question don't even own the rights to them. They have zero leg to stand on, legally or morally. It's not a moral issue.
Thats the point. You really dont care about the preservation of these films or what goes into it. You only care about "me, me, me." Getting to see them for your own personal gratification is all you care about. Simply knowing that they have been preserved for posterity by hard work and a lot of someone elses $$$ doesnt mean a thing to you and if you yourself cant see it then they might as well rot. Maybe I shouldnt have put all of that effort into the Langford-Jeanette film. Had I and my friends not then its possible, if not likely, that it would be a pile of dust right now just like the Jeanette-McVey fight I also found or the Carpentier-Gunther fight. If all I cared about was getting my ass kissed by a bunch of people I dont know for posting the thing on youtube I could do that everyday. Im not that short sighted.
And thats the problem. You see it as an us against them thing. Nobody is hoarding anything. And if you dont think I, or Tony Fosco, or Jim Jacobs, or anyone else who finds and preserves these things has done a service then you prove my point: You dont really care about these films or the preservation of history, you only care about yourself. And it is a moral issue because Im sorry but if the person responsible for the dissemination of this stuff doesnt want it spread all over creation then call me crazy but I like to honor their wishes.
I tend to see it both ways; I appreciate what Klompton and others like him do, because without that research, legwork, and time spent, we simply wouldn't have many of the films we do. On the other hand, I agree with Sanchzfan's post as well. Eloquent and well-said. In a perfect world, Klompton would be compensated appropriately for his passionate efforts, at the same time we would see and be able to discuss the results of such archaeology.
I haven't even bothered to watch it, to be honest. That isn't really the point. If preservation was really what your interest was, you'd applaud the uploading of these. If you and your cohorts want to tinker with them and do something you think will preserve them even better, then no one's stopping you. Go for it. How does one's posting the raw product on youtube hinder those efforts? Let's be honest; what's really in this for you? Did you want to sell them for a huge profit or something? Why hasn't it been done then? Or...............has it? :blood
You talk about me being selfish yet you defend the ****s who want to keep this to themselves and/or sell it for personal gain. All the while they don't own the actual footage, just a hard copy. If you care so much why don't you have it returned to the family of the people who created it, Or have it on the internet so fight fans and historians can see it and make copies of it that t is more like to be preserved. But, no, it seems you are to interested in personal gain. :finger Edit: And I do appreciate the work that goes into it, but don't think that it gives you authority to police or gives you creative control and licensing... It doesn't.
Okay, so now here is my thing: I spent quite some money myself to get a few rare fights. And I have never ever made any money or tried to make any money with the fights I have - meaning I never sold anything to anybody ever. And let's make one thing clear: I am not here since a long time but I went through your posts and I have never ever seen you post anything here, meaning a fight film. All you do is you say which fight films you have but then somebody asks you politely to post it and you don't answer at all or you say you won't post it. And everytime I see that I am thinking to myself "Really? Do I really want to know that he has that rare fight? Just to find out a second later that he is not gonna post it anywhere, not even a second of the fight?" I have seen your channel on a torrent site and I have seen request threads of yours in which you asked other people if they have certain fights and when in return somebody asked you to upload something, most of the time (not all the time, but most of the time) you do not answer anymore. You downloaded 1509 torrents on that certain torrent site and you uploaded 22 torrents. And I have done a lot of searching myself. I have a few friends and we try to get rare things and when they bought a rare fight, sometimes I get it too and I never post it anywhere and when I buy a rare fight, I give it to them also. But we are talking about maybe 2 or 3 guys with which I do that, not more, and we remind each other of not trading it around. I selflessly added annotations to your book on maybe 7 videos of mine who have a total of maybe 3 or 4 million views. And I never asked anything from you in return and I never would. But that is something you are okay with and you have no problem with it. But when somebody sometimes posts a rare fight like this Attell fight as an unlisted, unnamed video for 20 people in the history section, then you say this is all wrong. And I am not saying I do not understand your point of view because you do have of course your arguments, but to totally dismiss my or other people's arguments here as nonsense is definitely not okay with me.
How does posting it on youtube effect its preservation one way or another? If you think "tinkering" with films is the sum total of the work on I do on or with films then you havent been paying attention. Nothing is in it for me. I just know that the family has kept this relatively to themselves for years and probably wouldnt appreciate it being circulated like this. I told Baclava, who has always seemed like a nice and reasonable person. It wasnt until other people who know nothing of the situation spoke up that it got to this point. As for MEAZY, yes I do defend the people who have taken it upon themselves to preserve this stuff and if they choose to profit from it then why not? They are the ones who invested in it to save it to begin with. Why shouldnt they expect something in return for it? Furthermore the family does own the hardcopy. I never said I had control of it one way or another I merely made a suggestion to Baclava. And here is something else to consider, Baclava might want to take note: Youve got a rare film. You post it on youtube. Youve been told the owner might not appreciate it being posted on youtube. You say "I bought it I'll do with it what I want." Then you find out the owner has other films... Do you think youll ever see those? That's why I keep what I have to myself and Im satisfied with seeing it. I like fight films and I want more and I know that if I go and start pretending to be a big man by posting this stuff all over creation doors will start closing in my face. Just something to think about. You can buy fight films all day long. The films you can buy with money arent rare. I dont care if its Kilbane-Attell or anything else. Its the films you buy with trust that are rare. Those are the ones that the spoiled kids on this forum will never see.
Lets just address this little post point by point: 1. Ive made it abundantly clear why I dont post rare fights. If someone wants to know if I have something, ON OCCASION I will confirm it, particularly if its been released. If it hasnt then yes I play coy because frankly its none of anyones business and I dont want anyone bothering me to get it, which happens from time to time. I dont sell and I rarely trade because much of what I have that is RARE has been gotten from people who trust I will never release it. Im not going to jeopardize my reputation. Sorry, thats just the way it is. 2. You are going to call me out about torrents? Really? I keep my share ratio right where it needs to be and seed everything I download. Seeders are every bit as important for a vibrant torrent site as uploaders. I have requested things in the past and I have posted things in the past. Other times that you think I havent posted to a torrent I have actually sent the requester the dvd or worked out a trade with them. BUT, there are rules on torrent sites, its not the wild west. One of those rules is that you are not to resell what you download. Another is that if requested you are not to post on youtube. On several of the occasions that I posted something it was almost immediately up for sale and twice ive had things that couldnt be found anywhere posted to youtube. So yes, I dont post many torrents, thats why and thats my prerogative as long as I keep my ratio high. You can ***** about it but thats the way it is. 3. I appreciated you advertising my book and still do. Ive given you full credit for being a nice and reasonable person. I never meant to start anything with you with my initial post I was merely pointing out a fact that I thought you could benefit from. I know you like to collect rare fights and thats fine. I gave you some advice that could help you get more. How you choose to use that advice is up to you.
**** the hoarders who hide fights from the public. Thanks for sharing this Baclava really appreciate it.
Please note the passage I highlighted. You're making my argument for me now. Seems we're not so very far apart after all then. Excellent. Glad we have this detente. Now as to the rest of your rationale for not airing this or other pieces........your argument seems to be "You better learn how to play ball with these people, or that little tidbit you get is the only little something you'll ever get from them. Better mind your P's and Q's." Terrific. In your last post, you just tried to reassure us that it was incorrect to take this as an "us vs. them" issue. How should one take this now, given your last statements? My Gollum comparison looms rather large now, doesn't it? They really are out to do nothing but hoard something that they have no more legal right to than any of us. Sounds to me that the boxing enthusiasts of the world would be far better off without such people around to dole out what they deem fitting. At the end of the day, you're guilty of the very thing you accuse others of here. It's all about you and your own desires. Again, stop playing yourself up as some avenging hero of history. You're simply a hoarder. Nothing more, nothing less.
What's the experience of seeing fights/fighters that noone else has seen before worth if you can't share it with others who would appreciate it? If I had, for instance, Greb-Walker, it would be great to watch it of course, but wouldn't it be so much more satisfying to share the reactions with like-minded others? To share discussions and opinions on the fights would be the most satisfying thing I would think. What reason other than the "I have something over them" or "I have something they don't have" mentality drives people to this hoarding? It isn't like they won't be appreciated or given credit for doing all the work and releasing a much-coveted piece of history that everyone would benefit from... Its been said repeatedly that there is no monetary compensation or reason for all this; its just to be in "the circle"....
