Pernell Whitaker vs. Ken Buchanan At LW

Buchanan was a very good fighter, but with his upright style going against one of the most awkward fighters you can find, i see Sweet Pea taking a UD.

 

It would resemble Pernell Whitaker's title fight victory performance against Greg Haugen. Whitaker all day and all the way against Ken Buchanan.

 

Buchanan would throw his back out trying to hit Sweet Pea and get KOed

 

Buchanan's style bears no resemblance to Greg Haugen.

 

Just how I see it. Whitaker would take a close,yet,convincing decision.

 

Whitaker 8-4 a competitive but clear decision

 

This would be a very close fight. No way Pea ko's Buchanan. Who ever thinks that has never watched Buchanan.

 

I don't think this fight would be that close on the judges cards, as Whitaker is just that bit better, but every round would be close and competitive but with Pernell shading most of them. I don't think there's a great deal in terms of offense, although Whitaker does have the edge in the jab and slicker, it's Pernell's defence that is the key here, it's clearly superior and Ken wouldn't land enough to bag many rounds in my opinion. Whitaker UD, somewhere around 117-112.

 

Buchanan would run him close no doubt about it, but I'd fancy Pea to take it.

 

Gotta go with Sweet Pea, on points. Just.

 

Buchanan's slight height and reach advantages along
with a very educated left jab, would cause Whitaker
some early issues. But Whitaker would be able to
adjust to it with his speed and movement.
He'd go to win a very unanimous dec.

He beat Jim Watt but lost to Charlie Nash, another southpaw. Anyone know if any of his other notable wins or losses were against lefties?

I think with matchups involving southpaws you have to look at how the orthodox fighter did against other southpaws to get an idea. Some people have real problems with them and styles make fights as they say.

That being said, I just think Pea — as good as Buchanan was — is a cut above. He’s too much for Ken to outpoint and he’s not going to knock Whitaker out.

 

Pea is one of the top 5 H2H lightweights ever IMO, easily. He could be as high as #2. I'm thinking 9-6.
