Looks like Cleverly vs Makabu is a done deal at cruiserweight on the undercard of Golovkins next fight in Monaco. Strikes me as a very risky fight for Cleverly. Makabu is a monster who hits as hard as Kovalev.
I actually can't quite fathom wtf Clev thinks he's doing with this one - it's almost like he's decided that unless he can prove himself against an insanely dangerous puncher he might as well not bother with the sport. It's not even like it's a big money fight - I'm betting a Cruiserweight rematch with Bellew would make more £s. In fact I have no idea why he wanted to go to cruiser at all - his length, speed and stamina which were his main advantages at LHW are going to be relatively reduced, and he ain't suddenly going to become a power puncher by adding 25lbs. This is a strange, strange decision - though I've gotta admit, I'll be very impressed if he pulls it off.
Ya, I thought it was a horrible first fight at CW too:-( I like Cleverly, but I think he's putting himself in a bad position taking this fight.:think
Cleverly's should be an example of how not to match a boxer. First a padded record, then overly dangerous punchers, while going up in weight (25lbs no less)
I face-palmed when I read about this fight. He takes this fight for his first at CW? His management is really questionable. I think he should have warmed into the division with a couple of fights before taking something risky. Get used to moving and fighting with the extra weight on you, first. I haven't seen any odds for this fight, yet. Maybe there will be a mispricing on which to capitalize.
Yeah I don't think this is going to go well for Cleverly. Coming off a tough KO to move up in weight and fight another tough fighter. He should've tested the waters with a softer touch.
This is a terrible fight for Cleverly to have after his last outing. He should take an easy fight to test the waters, I believe he'll lose this in a bad fashion again, which could ruin the rest of his career!
Yes, Cleverly pulled out with an injury. I don't remember so many injuries in boxing in the past................
too bad he pulled out... "Junior" Makabu is a lot more fun to watch than Cleverly, be deserves to be fed some British fastfood. But Makabu is IMHO way too small for cruiserweight. He is more like a LHW that just fights on his walk-around weight.
