I grew up reading about the great champions of the past. Then came video footage and later youtube. There are still probably fighters I haven't seen much of! I must confess, I was a little disappointed in Sandy Saddler, though I don't doubt his greatness at all, just the fights I have seen were bad to watch.

Barney Ross and Tony Canzoneri were a bit of a letdown, too. Again, not saying they aren't great, just didn't find them good to watch.

    Who surprised or disappointed you?

    Henry Armstrong!

Fantastic resume and great fighter, no doubt - I just don't enjoy watching him.

MOST of the old film is a let down because the Filming was poor or the preservation of it or it's aging has corrupted it... but the odd gem turns up from those days proving they were indeed great fighters.

so when the odd reel shows right, then of course the rest of their fighting peers were just the same!

    Agreed with Armstrong.
Also, Baer looked like an oaf, Jack Johnson looked amateurish, Ketchel too, Papke...lots really.

The problem was that after reading about all these guys and their near superhuman abilities, I was expecting a lot more than what I saw on film. That's why for me the eye test is so important.

    Fitz and Corbett. Jeffries.

I think I would have a serious shot at whipping them, and that's not saying much.

It really makes you call into question the experts who praise them so highly- like they must have a real perception problem or something...
