How Would You Make Boxing Less Corrupt?

1 respected and fair sanctioning body with one 'champion' per weight and a stricter enforcing of the rule that the champion fights the highest-ranked contenders or loses the belt. Fighters have to work their way up the rankings to get a title shot.

Maybe tournaments for vacant belts. 8 of the top ranked fighters have q-finals, semi and final (similar structure to prizefighter but obviously not on the one night. For example, Q finals in March, Semi's in July, final in November).

Much stricter rules enforcing drug testing. Full random testing for every ranked fighter as compulsory and 3-5 year ban for fighters found guilty of PED use.

Try to cut out robberies. Clear robberies (e.g. Burns-Beltran) can be changed on revision of the fight by independent commission officials. Possibly have more than 3 judges so that a more balanced view can emerge. Suspend judges who give bad cards and reward good judges with extra money and more fights in future. Same for referees.

Referees use a standing 8 count instead of stopping a fight early like in Groves-Froch.

Promoters to get their license from the one boxing commission which can be revoked if they refuse to work together, not pay their fighters correctly, influence judging etc.

1. Drug testing, the most effective ones. Would have to be taken by every fighter randomly.

2. I think three belts each division is good. It spices things up knowing that there are two other champions in your division that you must take on to be decleared the undisbuted champ of your weight class, however these three title holders must fight one another after successfully defending there title 5 consecetive times. A mandatory 50/50 split for both fighters no matter there status popularity wise.

3. Every promotion company would work under one commission. With the final say regaurding any disbute, judged by the commission. For lack of cooperation of any promotion company the company would be fined or possibly suspended from the commission.

4. The fighters would be owned by the commission and not the promotion companies. The promotion company sold purpose would be to scout, manage, and promote the fighters. The purpose of this would be to prevent a noncooperative promotion company from taking the fighter away from the sport, should the promotion company not want to cooperate with the commisson.

I think if all of the above was the reality of this sport, every fight that should be made would be made, unless a dramatic turn of events prevent it. The best will fight the best no matter what. With out the BS in the middle to prevent it.

 

I think you have to have a single, governing body. There is way too many powerful people with interests in the WBA, WBC, WBO etc. You'll never be able to clean things up as long as fighters have he option of getting what they want by dealing with a corrupt organization. It's all economics, simple incentives. The only way to be able to change things would be to have the ability to:
1. Get fighters the fame and money they want
2. Be able to penalize fighters who duck other fighters
3. Be the biggest and best around so when you penalize a fighter he can't get number 1 anywhere else, which forces his hand.

Easier said than done. I would still have the drug testing done by an independent 3rd party so no one could claim foul play by the company.

Basically the same set up as the UFC.

 

recommend sharing ppv to all fighters in an event and not just the main event fighters. everyone is risking life and have their own followers. guaranteed purse will be determined by their popularity, p4p status, and boxing ranking. sanction champion fighters not fighting their mandatory challengers.
