Andre Ward: " I would Consider Fighting Groves...

I'd like to see the fight. It could be interesting.

 

There's sense, and then there's cents. I know he's got beef with his promoter, but the guy did get him nearly $2 million to fight Edwin Rodriguez.

 

Froch would be fuming if Groves got a Ward fight before him I think.

 

Nobody wants to fight in GB after all the BKO's and ridiculous scorecards we've seen lately.

...yes, that's all well and fine - but what does that leave?

After La Bomba there are precious few collectible scalps with pretty unbeaten records (but more than novice experience) out there. You've got Lil' Bro Dirrell, Brandon Gonzales, Badou Jack, Mantequilla Gonzalez, & Tommy O - and that's about it...and none of those have the American TV presence built up that Rodriguez had. In fact, none have even half of it.

Otherwise the upper end of the division is chock full of guys Ward has already beaten convincingly (Froch, Kessler, Abraham, Bika) or too obscure and/or skidding too badly to reasonably contend or to provide Ward any credit. (Maderna, Sartison, George, etc)

He won't get $2 million for any of the other unbeaten guys and the landscape has nothing else for him but stale rematches with no unfinished business.

Stieglitz and Groves are it. (of course, Americans won't know who Stieglitz is so to maximize his earnings Ward might have to board a flight to Magdeburg...and likewise Groves offers the biggest non-rematch payday available if Ward brings his belt to Britain...)

 

Dirrell/Bika on Showtime, Tommy O struggling at LHW now, Gonzales a close friend of Ward's... I would even argue that SES will never send Stieglitz to the US for him to hand his belt to Ward. For me, it's Groves, Froch or move up. A Froch-Groves II fight leaves Ward with nobody credible at 168 for a long time, might cause him to move up if it comes off.

 

Yeah. The situation could be completely beyond his control at this point, depending on how things shake out.

If Abraham beats Stieglitz in their rubber match (and even if not, since Ward going to Germany and Stieglitz coming here both seem unlikely), and if Froch and Groves have a rematch and possibly set up a drawn-out trilogy, it would be worst case scenario for Ward at 168. There would be jack **** left for him to do that would net him even a shred of credit.

 

Thing is Groves and Stieglitz (should he beat Abraham) I can imagine fighting each other.

Ward will probably be sniffing round Chavez Jr (if he beats Vera) for a payday, but so might Froch. And if Froch wins the Chavez sweepstakes, Ward is either going to have to come to the UK or he'll probably rematch Groves.

If Golovkin doesn't move up soon then Ward might want to consider moving to 175 himself.

 

i hear this all the time about carl's chin and power...but i've seen that guy get dropped and stunned on more than one occasion. i can't say the same for ward. also...who has carl stopped to get high praise for his power??? bute??? taylor??? those guys weren't exactly known to have sturdy chins.

 

I wouldn't mind seeing Ward and Groves square off. As long as Groves gets a win under his belt first.

 

As long as the fight is in England, good fight. Ward would win. Props to him if he finally mans up and goes to Europe.

 

Ward is afraid to fight outside his home town with his personal referee, judges, boxing commission, commentators, etc. Ward has to have everything his own way as he believes he is above everyone. There is a really good fight Ward could take and that is Stevenson, who called Ward out live on HBO, Stevenson said he would fight Ward at 168 if he had to, but Ward refuses to fight Stevenson even at 168!

 

Great fight. Best fight for Ward if he aint going to 175, and i doubt he will while that monster lurks
