I think Christianity was specifically mentioned because here in the USA it is the majority religion. Yes, the other Abrahamic religions share it's views, but Christianity is directly effecting legislation here. And once again it is Christianity being used to support oppression as it was used to support slavery. It has been scientifically proven that people are born gay. And the fact that it is seen in other species proves it is natural, and some scientists would even argue that all people are born bi***ual to some extent. Yes other specifies do kill and pedophiles are born that way, but that is not a valid argument, as both infringe upon another's rights and both are harmful. Which brings me to my next point that homo***uality does not harm anybody. It infringes upon nobody's rights so why must we infringe upon their's? I do not agree with their lifestyle and to e frank I think it is nasty, but the fact of the matter is that it hurts nobody, and is wen beneficial considering that gays are far more likely to adopt. So which is better a child being in an orphanage or having a family who loves him despite gender? It's ridiculous people still argue about this considering the natural and moral arguments against it a virtually disproven, and the religious standpoint is based off of a book that thinks the earth is flat and 6000 years old...
Aye, I realised you were joking - you made me chuckle. I agree with you - as I pointed out to Derrick (and has been ignored by certain posters), I don't care if that's what people believe. No one in their right mind believes that thoughts should be a crime. I just have a problem with bullying or suppression/denial of equality. I also agree that you shouldn't have to have anything shoved down your throat (in either sense ), though there is also a problem that certain people perceive campaigning for equality as just that, when in fact it is simply... campaigning for equality. Stop suppressing people and they won't feel a need to outwardly celebrate themselves in defiance or be active in politics. Deny rights then don't be surprised when they resist, and resist obstreperously. My reference to an ancient book could have applied to any of the abrahamic religions, though I did mention Christianity earlier admittedly, and you are quite right to point out its relevance in the context of the USA. Islam is probably broadly the least tolerant of the three towards homo***uality, judging by countries whose laws are influenced by it. Though Christianity makes a good fist of suppression too. Aside from the domestic issues in the US, there is a problem (which I mentioned earlier) of some US Evangelicals exporting their hatred to a fairly terrible degree, with (as possibly the most egregious but far from the only example) the recent laws in Uganda making homo***uality punishable by death having been strongly influenced by some of them (look up Scott Lively). Judaism isn't that much better in its orthodox form, though it at least shows more tolerance than the others in some areas. Here in the UK the only religious sects to explicitly support gay marriage were the progressive Jews and the Quakers (the latter of whom are I suppose Christians in a sense, but fairly fringe). Cleaving to a deeply flawed holy book is a terrible way to form the basis of morality, rather than simply judging for one's self, but that is the way a lot of people form their views, sadly, leading to some very black and white perspectives lacking the nuance to truly do justice to the reality of the world and the complexity of human behaviour. The biggest comfort though, as I pointed out earlier, as that these people are on the wrong side of history, and each new generation has fewer of them.
what you say is actually typical of how wrong you are - homo***uality as a disorder has been ruled out of diagnosis texts for decades. so unless you are living in a really backward place, or are really old and clinging to your old views, you don't have a leg to stand on.
