Who do you think would be best trainer for Nathan Cleverly?VOTE

    I think everybody agrees that he needs a new trainer.

    His dad has done well to get him this far but if he is going to box on he needs to be working with sombody with boxing experence.

    Who would fit the bill??

    Gary Lockett or Tony Borg would be great for Cleverly I think.

    I watched the media workout before his last fight, what was hillarious was that vince was just too tiny to hold the pads...He's about 5ft. and Nathan is 6ft 2'' he was holding them fully above his head, meaning there just isnt the resistance to the shots.

    I think Cleverly has some decent skills, is young enough and in good shape, but half his problems were mental, not following proper game plans and thinking he was better than he was.

    This all stems from a trainer who is too close to the fighter. I think anyone who can give him a good b0llocking when he needs it and tell him straight when he's sh1t will help him a great deal.

    I think the main issue will be getting decent sparing regularly, the british cruiserweight division is terrible, so getting good guys who are big to spar will mean paying the cash to bring them over, or go travelling.

    Supprise people are picking Enzo Calzaghe, he is not exactly known for his tenical advice.

    For location no doubt Gary Lockett.

    I just don't see him fighting much longer CW World level could be brutal make some money & get out rematch Bellew at CW decent coin here.

    To be honest until Nathan says he's looking to change his coach folk are wrong in putting threads like this up,Afterall it is his fathers job and his source of income, how would you feel if you were in his shoes pish I'm sure!

    There was actually talk of Roach being interested before. He was impressed by Cleverly when he came over to the Wild Card to train and spar and he seemed very open to the idea of training him.

    NATHAN CLEVERLY brought the legendary Wild Card gym to a standstill during an impressive sparring session this week – and could now return for more.

    The four-round work-out with unbeaten world ranked cruiserweight Lateef Kayode delighted the WBO light-heavyweight champion ahead of his title defence against Sioux Warrior Shawn Hawk at the Staples Center in Los Angeles tomorrow night.

    The sparring session also impressed Wild Card boss Freddie Roach, the 52-year-old who mentors Manny Pacquiao and has trained world champions like Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins and Amir Khan.

    Welshman Cleverly said: “The Wild Card was incredible – people sat on the side sparring and cheering the boxers on.

    “Everybody in the gym stopped and watched Lateef and myself.

    “ They were really enthralled and could see the skill level.

    “The whole gym clapped. It meant a lot that my style and technique was appreciated.”

    Roach – often considered the No.1 trainer in boxing – liked what he saw and Team Cleverly could be back in LA early next year if the Cefn Fforest fighter impresses against Hawk.

    “You want guys like that at your gym,” Roach said about Cleverly.

    “I wouldn’t hesitate to take him on, he’s definitely talented.

    “We haven’t discussed him coming here yet but he’s here, and maybe there’s a reason why he is here.

    “I think he is at the right stage where a unification fight would be good for him and he has the potential to beat any of the world champions.

    “It is a very competitive division right now – there are some good fights out there for him.

    “He’s a great boxer but his punching power is not the best in the world.

    “He still has a little bit of an immature style of scoring points and getting out of the way, but sometimes you have to take more chances.

    “The passive defence gives you a good defence but you can’t slip in a counter punch, that is the best way to knock out guys as you can take advantage of your opponent’s mistakes.”

    Cleverly admitted it was a “good compliment” that Roach had spoken so warmly about him.

    “He said he liked my skill, speed and that I was a really talented fighter,” he said.

    “That is nice because Freddie has worked with the best fighters in the world and that was a good compliment.

    “This climate is brilliant for training and I love Los Angeles.

    “ It is a great environment and everybody seems positive in this city. I’ve got the buzz for this place.

    “I could see in the Wild Card gym that he lives for that place and his boxing. You can’t help but pick up things.”

    It's a fair point billy but then what kind of trainer doesn't work on defence against a fighter who bangs like kovalev? It is harsh I agree but if Nathan is to have any future in boxing his dad has to go unfortunately.

    Lockett seems a loyal guy and Enzo and Nathan don't seem to get on so i don't see him going to train with Gary nor Lockett taking it.

    I think he's a homeboy so he won't want to go to far away from home but also he needs mentoring and a lot of contact so Joe G i don't think would be best for him due to the amount of fighters Joe has currently.

    Borg was going great guns with Selby and Buckland but not sure he would tighten up Nathan's defensive weaknesses. Nathan needs experience and a sound mentor, Someone strong who doesn't stand for stupidity and will identify what needs working on and how to develop it.

    Plus someone who can help him build into the weight. Harrison isn't overly experienced (has a fair amount at world level now) but possibly is the most viable and sensible choice IMO. I don't think Nathan will relocate nor the trainers so then the contact time isn't enough.
