The worst examples of this IMO are those whose reputation trades on their legendary feats in sparring, bringing them acclaim or at least buzz with nothing accomplished in the actual prizering to back it up.

Shawn Porter and Karim Mayfield both have certain fans swooning because they gave Pacman some good work. (and both also share that awful, flashy, speed-based with no regard for accuracy style carried over from the amateurs).

Paul Spadafora is a name every boxing fan knows and yet the absolute peak moment of his career is drawing with freaking Leo Dorin - all because he sparred his guts out with a PBF not up to his usual standard in the gym and caught on a subpar day.

Sergeant Eddie Brooks and Jimmy Ellis both decked The Greatest in sparring but neither was exactly ATG material in their actual pro careers. (though Ellis at least was a titlist)

First name that popped to mind when you mentioned sparring was definitely Spadafora, a more recent one is Guerrero sparring Pac in the wildcard. Probably because he bragged so much about it, before his fight with Mayweather anyways

I think the obvious one missing here is Margarito/Handwraps, true or not

several of the K bros opponents like Charr and Pianeta would be unknown to anyone if Ks hadnt elevated them artificially to bypass tougher opponents.

The same thing you think of when you hear the name Randy Turpin.

    Also...

Rosendo Alvarez (for being theguy who came closest to defeating Ricardo Lopez)
Baby Arizmendi (for his series against Henry Armstrong)
