In all likeliness Amir Khan will getting the next shot at Floyd a Mayweather. This got me to thinking about Khan's abilities and how they might serve him against floyd. I think overall Khan is a very solid fighter who could give any body at 147 problems when he is on. He's got a good jab, a good straight, a decent hook. His footwork is good, his hand speed is class, and despite being chinny, he's got tons of heart. Yet I can't help but feel that none of this will matter against mayweather. In my opinion, there's one thing about Khan that is going to be his undoing against Mayweather: his behavior after completing a lead attack. For whatever reason, Khan finishes almost all of his lead attacks by backing out of the pocket with a straight posture. His head is always in the air and exposed when completing an attack. I don't understand why he doesn't add other defensive tactics to his arsenal like pivoting on an angle like pacquiao does, or diving to the ground like mayweather does when he throws his lead right hand. If Khan corrected this habit I would feel a bit better about his chances but I have great doubts that he will.
If Khan would just box for 12 rounds he would have beaten Peterson and Garcia, but he gets overconfident in his abilities , throws crazy combinations and gets caught with silly shots. I like the kid , he just doesnt have a lot upstairs.
Good points. You really can't afford to make such mistakes against such an accurate puncher in Floyd. He doesn't have thunderous power but you don't need that to hurt Khan.
Not really. Look, I was one of the few people after he beat Paulie and destoyed Zab, that thought ok this guy may be the one to really put Floyd's "0" in danger. After his fight in UK against some dude in which he won by TKO, my feelins started to change. In that fight he got stoppage, but he didn't adjust very well, but I chalked it up as a not so great night. Then in the Peterson fight here in DC which I attended, it became apparent that he has subpar defense and has NO inside fight game whatsoever. That and I noticed he literally pushes his opponents the whole fight. I am not talking about the strategized elbow to throat by Floyd or the mauling tactics of Bhop/Ward ( where these fighters have the somewhat dirty but clever skill of throwing you off your game) , no I am talking about blatant full extension pushing. It i similiar to throwing a med ball from the chest. His biggest problem is that he doesn't appear to work on his craft at all. His style is a great fit for the amatuers as apparent by his succcess in the Olympcs but his quickness (maybe he length to a degree) is the only reason he has gotten this far in his pro career. I do think he is young enough to become a P4P fighter again, but my insticts tell me that he and Golden Boy are looking at the Floyd fight as a cash out. Well see ...
He lacks one crucial ability the ability to adjust, khan doesn't have the thinking sharp boxing brain every great fighter has. I mean how dumb can you get he downs Maidana with a body shot then proceeds to head hunt for the next 11 rounds.atsch Roger or floyd snr are not some sort of boxing genius tacticians floyd is doing the tactics on the fly inside the ring. It's free form boxing jazz baby :hat you can only beat it if you have many tricks of your own. Mayweather is David Blane, Khan is your nephews card trick.
AMIR, NEVER HAD ANY CHANCE , NOW OR IN HIS PAST TO JUSTIFY THIS HYPE! How many times has this guy struggled in his career, how many times has he been knocked down, why does he not avenge his defeats?
Amir Khan has an underrated left hook to the body and he barely uses it... I agree with you... when i rewatched the maidana fight I was thinking why ISN'T he going to body again... i don''t understand why his corner didn't tell him that either... in fact, roy jones throughout the commentary kept saying that too.. peterson was on peds otherwise the rematch was on... angel garcia didn't want a rematch with khan... simple as that... the prescott defeat is all risk and no reward since prescott is no where to be found so it doesn't make sense
For all that he gets slagged on these forums, I was quite impressed by Bradley Skeete in his last fight. He got knocked down by Colin Lynes early on and took a knee. He could have risen immediately and boxed-on, but instead he had a good rest and collected himself before continuing. For me, the calm and discipline he showed after the knock-down far outweighed the negative impression of being floored. I couldn't help but wish that anyone of Khan's many trainers had been able to instill him with a similar attitude. That rather than always responding to being hit hard by flailing back wildly, he was able instead to keep calm, take advantage of any rests, and stick to strategy. I reckon the Petersen fight at the very least might have ended differently.
i've seen khan get outworked by an amateur with less than 30 fights. he's seriously flawed and cannot hide behind selective match making for long. he is his own worst enemy. stays in the pocket too long...throws too many punches. if u can time him...u can beat/stop him. it's that simple. nothing has changed with virgil because the kid thinks he knows it all. if he would stop and listen to virgil he could learn the things he needs to fix his flaws.
