Personal opinion.. Glencoffe won by 1 point and he was the man making the fight a lot more watchable... Bad Chad wasn't awful.. but he wasn't very good... considering...
Everyone knows ageing fighters get passed over for younger more marketable fighters unless the fight is a clear shutup hence why Dawson got the 'Win'. It's a small matter now though because what's on paper is on paper but the fans know the kind of fighter GJ is how Dawson shapes up in the grander scheme of thing I just hope this puts to bed the enless Calzaghe v Dawson debate because if Joe gets by Hopkins I do not want him wasting his final matchup against a paper champion like Dawson.
Not impressed by Tarvers showing at all, think that Dawson would make him look bad.. Johnson is no easy match, so lets not dismiss Dawson so quickly...
Dawson did win, but I thought it was close enough to warrant a rematch. . But I doubt there will be a rematch. Dawson probably don't want to risk that.
Well judging by your post older and wiser than you. THANK GOD! And while we talk about he said she said etc, im quoting what was said on t.v I dont pretend to be the personal filing clerk and office manager in charge of frank warrens deals etc Like you dont pretend to be an adult, but Joe C did say those things he wanted the fight like he wanted Bhop but like always u.s fighters prefer to fight each other, and if thats not enough they fight again and again and again! And if a classy fighter lets say like cotto comes up, DO YOU HEAR MAYWEATHER CALLING HIM OUT??? no way because cotto wins that fight and mayweather knows it, this boxing business is all about how much am i going to be paid, what are my chances of losing, take the gatti fight with mayweather, why were people not saying that gatti was washed up, old finished etc? mayweather hand picked him because he knew he would look good against him, cotto is a different story alltogether, but all we hear about is joe c and his handpicked opponents etc look a little closer to home and you will find many.
I agree, joe has maybe two or three fights left Id like him to fight tarver next, then maybe pavlik at a catch weight, but the most likely is a huge stadium filler back in the uk against roy jones.
I said prove it, not toss out a bunch of rhetoric that may or may not have been said and even if it was said, may not have even been true. And just because Warren says that an offer was on the table doesn't mean it was, and just because you said he said that doesn't mean I believe you. Now prove it. If there are quotes and all of these things were said in the media, then you should be able to find me a source. And what I really want to see are the "demands" Jones made. Because as far as I can tell, Calzaghe has never tried leaving the UK area until now. Lets get one thing straight, person who's name has Calzaghe in it.....I nor anyone else here who has any intelligence, is simply going to take your word on anything that has to do with Calzaghe. You have already made it painfully obvious that you're biased and will push things into a "Calzaghe was right" perspective. So PROOF. Welcome to ESB.
OHHHHH.....so in other words, because Calzaghe said it, it must be true. This is your source? You don't know what demands were made by Calzaghe (Warren), you don't know whether or not Calzaghe said any of the things he says he did, and frankly, the ONLY time anyone here has EVER brought up Calzaghe vs Jones, they wanted Jones to come to the UK. There has never been any mention of ANY offer turned down by Jones or any demands made by Jones that were outrageous. When you make accusations, proof is in order. Why? Because Calzaghe did not hold any cards in 2001 to make Jones do anything. And all signs point to the fact that Calzaghe had no intentions of leaving the UK to face Jones Jr in the states.
He had no intentions of leaving the u.k because roy jones already said he would travel to uk to fight joe He was crtiticised for saying he would go overseas to fight dariusz mickelcewski and then didnt do so. Saying he would travel to wales after fighting felix trinidad and fight joe there, but after the trinidad fight didnt carry out his promise. And any paper in the u.s will have those promises and quotes for you. As for bernard hopkins http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/2511439.stm This link talks about the discussions between don king and frank warren for joe c v hopkins in 2002
I didn't ask you about Hopkins. I already know about Hopkins....I made no denials about Hopkins. Jones said to Eubanks that he would love to fight in London one day. But anytime an actual offer for a fight was in the works, Jones always insisted that any fights take place in the States. We all know that because Jones was insistant (no matter what he said in passing when there were no negotiations going on) on fighting in the States because of the 88 Olympics. So Jones never said he would fight DM OR Calzaghe anywhere else but here in a formal offer and was always insistant that they come here. I don't see you calling out Calzaghe for not wanting to leave the UK to fight the top rated fighter in the world at the time. DM never wanted to come here and neither did Calzaghe. And frankly, why would Jones ever go to them? So no, I don't believe, and most here don't believe that Jones ever ran from Calzaghe. Jones held all the cards there and my guess is "outrageous demands" include "coming to the US" and getting a majority of the purse, all things he should have gotten anyways. And the DM fight was always something that was on both their heads.
If jones was so confident about a meeting with calzaghe 1 Purse shouldnt have mattered 2 Place shouldnt have mattered And the thing is the only reason that Roy Jones would like the joe c fight again now, is becasue he knows that in the uk we can fill a stadium for boxing near to 70,000 + where has that ever happened in the states? I cant remember even the biggest of fights approaching those numbers The fact is the u.s isnt the only place to go for big fight nights, and occasions hatton took 20,000 to vegas, would bernard or roy command such support over here, so where is boxing bigger here or the states? Joe C will have similar support following him over to vegas too. I think if Roy Jones or Bernard Hopkins could achieve even half that support coming over here they would have travelled, but its a fear thing having no support over here to combat the atmosphere of a great british fight night. Why does it always have to be america?? What does msg hold 15,000/20,000 and the casinos less than that perhaps Joe calzaghe had 60,000 at the kessler fight Ricky Hatton regularly has 20,000 plus at his manchester fights, and the same travel to the u.s Perhaps this is what puts doubts into the minds of u.s fighters to travel here? I dont know all I do know is im looking forward to this fight, and for calzaghe to start silencing the critics.
I see you are doing your best to ignore what I said. Why are you asking these questions only of Jones? If Calzaghe was so confident, then place and purse shouldn't have mattered to him either. But at some point, those things are negotiated. And here are the facts. Jones was better known around the globe. Jones would have been defending HIS three LHW titles making him the champion and the man in the fight. Jones was one the top 2 ranked boxers in the world for nearly a decade at this point. Calzaghe had no leverage. So when things were being decided, then Jones held all the cards. It is very easy to say, "Well Jones shouldn't have cared if he was so confident." Well vice versa. As for those numbers you quoted. Jones, just as Calzaghe, would have felt comfortable in the States and liked having his support system. There is nothing wrong with that. I don't get into the US vs UK debate. It isn't about that. It's about these 2 fighters and the facts surrounding their careers in 2001. Jones was the one who held all the leverage. If Calzaghe wanted the fight, he would have had to concede location and majority of purse to Jones. The PPV numbers and option Jones would have had BTW, would have been better in the States. Yes, more fans would have shown up in the UK for the fight, but Jones wouldn't have gotten more money that way.
