Oh and The mighty Bronko Sobot who after Joe beat him to a pulp then said he was going over to the states to fight charles brewerer this was in 1998.
Mayweather's an arsehole, it's not hard for anyone to hate him. As for Joe, it's funny that the yanks pick up on one negative comment he makes about Bernard. It's fair enough for Joe not to think Bernard's a legend..he's feasted on welterweights, light-middles and guys Rocky softened up first
Calzaghe either: 1) Believes all the hype about himself. 2) Is just trying to **** off Hopkins. 3) Is a damn fool. Regardless, being undefeated is virtually meaningless. The number of champions who retired undefeated are who??? Name them on one hand...Marciano, Ricardo Lopez, etc. Hopkins is a legend, and his resume is far more impressive than Calzaghe's...plain and simple.
Of course there was a difference! All of Ricky's comments were tongue in cheek...there to bring a smile and a laugh. Not like the garbage that came out of Mayweather's mouth.
Yeah...feasted on Trinidad (Undefeated Middleweight Champion) what was a 4:1 favorite I believe... Feasted on DLH and Wright (2 hall of famers with titles in multiple divisions) Feasted on Tarver (Legitimate Light Heavyweight Champion) And Hopkins held the Middleweight Title (a more prestigious one, in a tougher division) for a similar length of time to Joe Calzaghe... I forgot though....from 1997 (Eubank) to 2006 (Lacy), who did Calzaghe fight??? Oh yeah, guys with padded records and cab drivers...hmmmm... Are you really comparing resumes? Calzaghe is a legend of a division that everyone else uses as a pass through to Light Heavyweight...GOOD CALL!:good
Trinidad and DLH were best at WW..if you call them serious middleweights then you fell for the hype...por shame. Wright was a pudgy light middle with no pop and he still chased Bernard around the ring. Tarver made his name with one punch, as far froma legend as you can get. And how is the middleweight title more prestigious?! It's a weight division..super middle is argually harder to keep since the boxers are bigger. If you want to talk about padded records, how about Steve Frank, Joe Lipsey, William Bo James, Andrew Council, Robert Allen (x3!), Keith Holmes and lets not forget Morrade Hakkar! Every fighter takes easy fights from time to time but your jsut deluded into believing Bernards own hype after he beat a bunch of blown up welterweights and light-middles. Good fighter yes, legend my arse.
NAME A SINGLE LEGEND THAT CALZAGHE BEAT...There are none... Name his best fights from Eubank to Lacy...what did he do for 9 years??? He didn't try to unify the division, he didn't move up in weight to seek out bigger fights. He didn't leave his backyard to fight. Give me a break. Every fighter has a "prime" weight. You don't think Trinidad was dangerous at 160 or legit? Give me a break... Then don't count Mosley at 147 or 154, because his best weight was 135... Don't count Duran above 135...Don't count SRL above 147....etc. That's bull****. Hopkins has been the underdog and won in BIG FIGHTS against WORLD CLASS fighters...period. I agree they weren't all their prime weight, but so what? Rarely does that occur. Calzaghe's big wins are Eubank (end of his career), Lacy (all hype), Kessler (fought nobodies before Calzaghe in his 40 fights), Robin Reid (who almost beat Calzaghe), and who else??? Sakio Bika? Calzaghe for 9 years of his prime (1997-2006) was the WBO SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE HOLDER...that's it.
This is why I consider Joe terrible for boxing. He's SOOO concerned about maintaining his undefeated record, that he's basically wasted his whole career. He honestly thinks that his 44-0 is better than Hopkins 48-4-1? atsch He obviously doesn't know much about boxing history, but that doesn't surprise me. A good year or two (and no more than good) at the end of his career doesn't make up for 10 years of obscurity. Not in my opinion, anyhow.
Kessler will be a legend, don't worry about that. He's a hell of a fighter and the way Calzaghe controlled the fight was amazing. The only legends Hopkins beat were from lower weight classes...that's hugely significant. Good wins, but not legendary stuff. Calzaghe beat Eubank, Brewer, Woodhall, Reid, Mitchell, Lacy and Kessler..all world champions. He even went to Germany to fight Veit on Veit's promoters card. And why do you have to leave europe to be a legend when you can pull 50,000 (take a second to imagine that ) people in Cardiff. THat's legendary stuff and you'll see more legendary stuff on saturday. P.s. I'll be there My flight leaves for Vegas in the morning...Get In!
Hopkins beat more World Champions than Calzaghe did. Hopkins beat more P4P top 10 fighters. Hopkins beat more HOFers. Kessler will be a legend??? Says who? He hasn't beaten a great fighter yet...so pipe down until he does... YOU LEAVE YOUR OWN BACKYARD TO SEEK OUT BIG FIGHTS AGAINST BIG NAMES. Veit is a big name? My ass Brewer? My ass Woodhall? My ass They're jokes as far as "greatness" goes...and you must know that.
Pipe down!! That made me laugh!! Why do you have to leave home to seek big fights if you can draw 50,000 people? Hopkins couldn't even sell 7,000 tickets when fighting Winky! You fight where the money is...and since Hopkins wouldn't go to Wales, even for lots of Money, joe's going to Vegas to fight him. You have to applaud it. Veit's not a big name but a decent boxer...point is Joe fought on Veit's promoters card in Germany. As for Woodhall, I really doubt you've ever seen him box, if so you wouldn't have made that comment. He was an excellent boxer. Hopkins has beaten little men to fool people like you that he is a legend. On saturday we will see if he can back it up against a man his own size. I know who my money is on
And therein lies your answer to your other threads (regading title reigns of these two and DM). Hopkins also defended the UNDISPUTED title about 7 times, rather than the 0 that Calzaghe made. Hopkins main victories come over established p4pers and HOFs, not up and comers. The problem for Calzaghe in beating young up and comers, is that hindsight will play a big part (in terms of how HISTORY will remember him). Lacy has turned out to be nothing (although he CAN bounce back); the jury's still out on Kessler.
Ummmm...you're aruging business, I'm talking boxing... Calzaghe wanted EASY money, so he fought at home against "contenders" (if you could call them that)... Calzaghe now ALL OF A SUDDEN cares about his legacy. He can't have it all ways, and neither can you. I commend Calzaghe for being a good businessman. He made good money, and never got badly hurt. But a legend, he is not...
