Joe would keep getting up multiple times from knockdowns since he never stayed down, proven track record for getting up, and he'd push relentlessly for the full 12 rounds, despite being consistently way behind in accuracy and damage delivered.

but the real truth is that joe wouldn't take the fights, not in a millions years. he didn't follow Bhop's wage requests up even after he had a golden chance to, and he admits himself that roy was too good for him.

Calzaghes MOST FEASIBLE absolute best American opponents would lie somewhere between puppet champ Jeff Lacy and an injured one armed Antwun Echols, round about sub NABF champion level. He wouldn't go higher than that, because - if we are sticking to the facts - he never did.

Some people would have you believe that Calzaghe was some lucky bum who stumbled through a career. These people are pathetic.

He did opt for some pretty inexcusable defences. The pudwill one being the worst example but nearly all fighters have some awful defences on their records. RJJ being particularly reluctant over the course of his career.

Also calzaghe wasn't a know steroid user unlike RJJ who quite frankly we'll never know how good he actually was and for me should have a big asterix next to his career as should toney.

 

Its hard to imagine Jones beating Calzaghe at any point in his career. I think we only saw a clean Jones from after the Richard Hall fight onwards and if you look at his 3 fights before Jones fought Calzaghe and the 2 fights he fought after Calzaghe, Jones was basically still fighting at the same level he was during his bogus 175 run from after the failed steroid test in the Richard Hall fight.

You look at the match up you just feel that Jones would always have trouble with that southpaw stance and the speed and intensity of Calzaghe's work :

Calzaghe had adaptability, Jones had none
Calzaghe produced his best when faced with adversity, Jones folded when faced with adverisity
Calzaghe had a great chin, Jones didn't

They are 3 really important factors in this match up. What people need to realise is that Calzaghe had infinitely superior boxing IQ to Roy Jones as demonstrated in their match up. Tarver and Johnson beat Jones because he had a glass jaw, where as Calzaghe hands were incredibly brittle which led to many boxing experts predicting that Jones would win the match-up, but what the experts didn't realise is that Calzaghe was the far superior boxer who could control the distance with superior foot movement, who would continually change the angle of his attack with superior timing.

A match up with a juiced Jones would be a closer match-up, I think you are talking about a very close points decision in that match up due to Jones having enhanced power, speed, and stamina. If the fight took place in the states with Joe Cortez refereeing and with 3 american judges then its not beyond the realms of possiblity that a juiced Jones could eak out a decision.

 

This is the most pathetic myth here, former MW went to fight for HW belt reluctant:huh faced Hopkins, Toney, Hill etc if you compare his record to Joe and its not even close.

If you re-read my post you will see that I believe a juiced Jones - Calzaghe would be a very close decision with Jones possibly winning depending on the officials and fight location :deal

 

I like Joe a lot. He was an excellent boxer and it is a shame that he didn't fight more upper level fighters but he wouldn't ever have beaten the best of RJJ.
