I would like to see ONCE someone who clearly has an emotionally driven agenda-where they identify with some guys & rip others, projecting all Fear & Loathing & disowned negative emotions on them: grow up & admit they are doing this. Acknowledge being highly selective in citing the good & the bad.

We can use a microscope to make it out like the greatest athletes or supermodels or moral leaders are defective if we grotesquely amplify the flaws & minimize or ignore successes & virtues.

A sign of this obsessive agenda is bringing up Tyson-not to define Dempsey, but to slam Tyson-on a Dempsey thread. Tyson had good competition relative to mot HWs while remaining undefeated, often devastating, as the youngest HW champion ever. Then he imploded, though remained often excellent for some years.

Dempsey had more questions about him during prime or near prime years (as a near starving hobo means less) re: who he lost to & who he ducked. Though he was great & a historic, game changing figure, where he belongs in rankings is a good question.

He ducked Greb. Would Marciano duck Greb?

Jack Dempsey has become criminally underrated by modern boxing fans. When there were still people alive who had seen Dempsey fight, he was right up there at the top, along with Ali and Louis.

He still should be, for not only did he destroy his opposition the way Tyson did, but he ruled the division for a lengthy period of time. He's a top 5 HW ATG no question.

    I'm sure I'm getting tiresome here but different ERA's guy's! Different ERA's!
    A 2000 Dempsey? A 210-15 lb. wrecking machine!
I could reverse tons of fighters. 20-30-40's guys late in the century.
I could reverse tons of fighters. 80-90-2000 guys and put them back
    in the 20-30-40's.

    You just can't compare.
I'm not saying MANY modern greats weren't better than some old-time greats but you have to look at the era and the context of size, skill level at the time, weight changes, training changes thruout the years.
I think Ali is the greatest HW champ of all time.
But as far as the thread goes, if you could possibly put those two against each other in any kind of fair era scenerio, I've always said that Jack could well be the toughest out Ali ever faced.

Jack Dempsey was great, but gets underrated because everyone who saw him is either ancient or dead.

He was not great. He was totally outboxed by Tunney and could not knock-out Gibbons. He reigned long because he did not defend the title for long. His popularity was based on the "long count" - people talked about robbery and folklore created a myth.

How many black fighters did Jack Dempsey fight again? Oh none. He is popular for the same reason Marciano, and Tim Tebow were popular.

Being good for his era doesn't equal all time great. Hell Wlad is good at knocking out 3rd rate fighters but that doesn't equate to being great.

Dempsey was nothing more than a wild swinging crude fighter, in a era where most fighters threw one punch at a time he threw a lot of wild ones at a time and people thought that was exciting.

"Being good for his era doesn't equal all time great."

I would say it a bit differently, but I judge it exactly the opposite.

Being great in your own era is exactly what makes you an all-time great.

If you were not great in your own era, how in the hell could you be an all-time great.

If you were great enough in your own era your record stands out as one of the all time great records and you are an all-time great.

    Records make greatness, not opinions.

**That said, there is enough to criticize in Dempsey's record to perhaps deny him an all-time great ranking. That is what is under debate.

edward morbius then you clearly don't understand what all time great means. For example let's say I fought in a heavyweight era that had all of these guys in their primes. Foreman, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Joe Frazier, Ray Mercer. Ike Ibeabuchi, David Tua, Ken Norton ect ect ect. Another boxer fought in a era where the best fighters were a prime Butterbean and Kevin McBride. So because you dominated that era you are great now?

Opinions is the only thing you people give. Was Jack Dempsey a heavweight bu modern standards? No, did he fight any black fighters period? No. But in your opinion because he feasted on nobodies in his era that makes him a all time great? Funny stuff.
