What is more impressive in your opinion, Wilfred Benitez winning a world title again future HOF fighter Antonio Cervantes at 17, or the possibility of Vasyl Lomachenko winning a title in just his second pro fight? Vote and discuss.
Good arguments should be able to be made for whichever fighter you choose. Vote and tell us why. :thumbsup
Benitez won his world title back when there was only 2 recognised world title the WBC and WBA , which make it very impressive. Factor in the he was only 17 and had already rised to the top of the of the professional ranks makes it a remarkable acheivment. There the reason I think Benitez's acheivment is better Heres why I think Vasyl Lomachenko acheivment isn't as good. Lomas already had 6 semi professional fights in the WSB without headgear or vest so they give him great preparation for when he entered the pro ranks. He fought some of the worlds top amatuers in these bouts eg. Selimov . This is better preparation for the pro ranks than say having 15 one sided knock out victories against no hopers. Although I still think Lomo victory should go down as a world record. His also had almost 400 amateur fights 2 Olympic glod, 2 world championship gold, and a European gold medal in the amatuers which means his already boxed over 1000 rounds even if it is the amatuers is still incredible experience. His also 26 which means his pyscially mature, where as at 17 your still developing. On another note you should look up Nipper Pat Daly, he made his professional debut at 9 years old and was a world ranked contender by the age of 14
Good post. I was going to try and play devils advocate for Lomachenko, but you've covered all the bases. To beat Salido though will certainly rank among incredible feats. I think he wins that fight and has a very bright future. Was looking at boxing records earlier and though I saw 10 years old was the youngest pro debut. Either way this stat is just insane!
Loma beating Salido is just that. Beating Salido right now doesn't mean all that much more, and arguably less, then beating Gradovich or Vetyetka at featherweight. Fans can't say paper titles are irrelevant and then try to claim that this title, recently filled from vacancy, somehow holds meaning.
I think D BLOCK made a great point to that Benitez beat a hall of famer didn't think of that, his debut was 1 month before his 10th birthday crazy stuff haha
Paper titles are meaningless in my opinion, but I'm trying to appeal to all fans no matter what you deem better or worse. Should Loma come away from this fight victorious it will still be hugely impressive, and I think he will do so and loom very good doing it.
So how do we rate a victory over Loma if Salido wins? An unproven 1-0 novice is not that great of a title defense. Look at Floyd Patterson over Pete Radmacher. Would we have to wait to see if Loma ever went on to accomplish anything afterwards in order to properly judge? Interesting to think about...
Obviously Benitez. The guy grew up and was trained in a professional fight culture were turning pro early and getting put in tough was the norm. Lomachenko was fighting as a junior amateur at 17 and did not even enter top senior level competitions until he was 19. Professional boxing is more physically taxing on a human and having success at such a young age against fighters who are far more physically mature is remarkable. Probably not the best approach to longevity though.
It would depend on the rest of Loma's career. Say he goes on to beat several contenders only a couple fights after...the win would look very good. If he pulled a Radamacher, well it really wouldn't be that impressive looking at the big picture. Jmo.
