Gatekeeper eliminator bout. One gets another shot at big stage, one gets a gate and guardhouse.

So a guy loses to two top fighters by decision and his career is now over

Ran even or possibly beat Cotto. Many thought he ran even or possibly beat Canelo, as well. A fight with open scoring, Canelo, ahead, knew it and fought that way. Clear decision loss to Lara.

I would say Trout is just fine. I hope he stays active and keeps fighting, even it he isn't in a high profile fight right away. Keep on TV anyway you can. The Charlos and Andrades of the world will come calling. Or some hot shot who needs a step up. Beat a few of those and a Smith or a Molina and you are right back in it as the B side for whoever is hot.

He's definitely not an elite fighter at 154

But I respect him, he seems like a solid, humble guy and he is a great fighter. I imagine he'll fight a couple of B-level guys before maybe getting another world title challenge/big name bout against someone he hasn't faced at 154
