good find, I wish Nick Wells had the right professional backing and training. A guy like Charlie Goldman could have worked wonders with Nick. I think Nick had a style that was suited for the pro's because he had power= sick power but southpaws were converted back then (Joe Frazier,Cooney) and Nick was mismanaged and they wasted his talent like many others with natural ability. Willie Dewitt from Canada is another heavyweight that comes to mind as misguided and poorly trained while Marciano,Holmes, Ali, Tyson,(1st time Cus & co) Lewis, Vlad K (Manny S) had excellent management timing and the right trainer to suit their styles by the way good photos
Hey Kolcade, haven't talked with you in awhile here and I think it was about Nick too. I was at the '72 National golden gloves in Minneapols and Well's was scary awesome going into his bout with Bobick. I can't recall now whether he ko'd 3 or 4 to get to the final but his power was undeniable. The bout with Duane wasn't the bombs away I expected as Bobick controlled it with smart boxing out of a weave and then put Nick down and ended it in the third with a powerful right hand to his chest. At that point both of them looked like possible future heavyweight champions.
Good stuff, there is a documentary that was made on Wells by the film dept at UTA . I'm am working on getting it out on you tube . I recently spoke with Teddy Atlas due to his connections with The Tyson group . Teddy gave me Steve Lotts number who has control of a vast film library of old fights from the 70s that I've been looking for from CBS/ABC vault. I hope that this will pan out and provide some fights that a lot of people have been wanting to see.
