Your 3rd example is completely different to the other two; "He wasn't himself" means he didn't perform as he was able/usually does, where as "used the wrong tactics" is pretty self explanatory

Hatton was never in Floyds class. Burns was suffering from a broken jaw against Beltran, and gunshy against Crawford. Cleverly had never beaten a legitimate World Champ before losing to himself.

excuse don't trouble me IF there true. Hell we go to work every week and every two or three weeks we'll just "not be into it today for whatever reason, especially IF injured or sick"... so ligit excuse are perfectly fine and normal.
