Late in his career, yes. A scoring punch is made with the knuckle part of the glove, so a lot of Joe's work WAS illegal. I was amazed that referees didn't penalize him for it. At the very least, the judges should have taken it into account.
You shouldn't joke about that. The speedy pawed rangefinder hook is one of the most lethal punches in boxing, and Calzaghe took them to a new level. Some might even go as far as saying he perfected the technique:deal
When you throw over 1000 slaps some of them are bound to do some damage, just ask my wife. Who care's if he slapped or not. No one was prepared to walk through them to win. Hallmarks of a great champion.
You are right. Only England officials allow English fighters to keep using such illegal tactics without penalty. Calzaghe had a way of slapping down where he'd drag the lacing and tape on his glove across his opponents face. You can see him do it repeatedly in Calzaghe-Hopkins.
Calzaghe had excellent foot speed. This allowed him to get into position to utilize those fast hands for his combinations. Just IMO. Fast hands mean jack **** if you can't get in good position to punch. Obviously his stamina was stellar. Cocaine is a hell of a drug. (Just kidding, I know Joe started that stuff later)
Natural stamina + he trained hard for fitness and stamina + he didn't load up much on his punches. Even in his younger days when he had some pop he never tried too hard to get power in his shots. He just went for speed and with speed comes some power.
This! Why does skinny hearns punch hard? Why was M. Taylor So fast? Why does McCall have a great chin? Some people are born with gifts.
