It is hard as hell to make enough money to keep a gym open. Generally, fighters don't have money. Kids, those that want to become fighters, have even less. The people that have money are those that come to get fit. So you end up teaching people to do a bunch of pointless bull snot that they have seen in movies because they expect it, and, as was noted above, the customer is always right. When it comes to fighting, the trainer is always right.
That's why managers and trainers usually agree to a % of a fighters earnings. Because that's the only time the guy ever has any money. and as you said: "When it comes to fighting, the trainer is always right."
I just had a flashback of my old trainer trying to give me defensive advice Trainer: Now this round just throw punches as wide and as wild as you can because when you get tired you're gonna throw punches like that anyway. Me: (Starting to realize why the other fighters in the gym have Mayorga technique.) Trainers. Pfftt.
The number of trainers that have made those future earnings deals with fighters and seen nothing is beyond estimate.
It's counterproductive to waste time teaching technique to people who aren't going to fight and are primarily focused on conditioning. Boxing is much more tiring when you do it wrong. Some gyms have enough business to only take fighters. If you're looking to fight, that's the kind of place you want to be. If not, then don't go there.
For sure :good The trainer takes a punt when he starts training the guy that he'll actually progress to having pro fights and earning purses. In many cases they don't even make it there, or if they do they fail spectacularly and quit.
Half the fighters are out for there own personal glory. Half the trainers are out for personal glory and most of the others are out for business. Bunch of Slimy Wretched Reptilian mother ****ers.
Where are you from? I must admit, "keep fitters" in general are the bain of our gym. Obviously, most coaches want to train lads to box competitively and anyone who doesn't want to box takes up our limited resources. However, if someone is wanting to spar and help the competitive boxers out then I have no problem with that. They are more than welcome in the gym and I'm happy to give them some coaching time.
Move on man. Find yourself a good trainer and you'll receive good instruction. They are out there. You just need to research your choice more thoroughly.
There is a place for everyone. I don't think there is anything wrong with a gym turning away a keep fitter if that isn't what they do. Would you be upset if you were turned away from Aston Martin because you wanted to buy a minibus?
