KOVALEV is a 30-1 favorite I thought HBO was done with mismatches ? Reminds me when HBO used to pay millions to Berto to KO Bums Kovalev you r better then that
HBO has no problem with mismatches as long as it's the right fighter in there. A lot of people are excited to watch Kovalev fight despite him having only one noteworthy win. If you bring in the ratings, or have the potential to bring the ratings, HBO will back you.
Uh, I dont know why that would be. Anyway, no one wants to fight Kvalev dude. Dont you know that? agnew stepped up. He's the only one who did.
I follow Kovalev closely. It's well known information for those who pay attention. i'm not "spinning" anything. Kovalev isnt generating revenue yet. They're hoping by featuring him as a main event this weekend that that will help him gain a following. That'll help him get fights. Dudes have stepped up in the past. and even laughed at the idea of him being a fierce puncher. Like Lionell Thompson. Now after Campillo and Sillakh, everyone is a little more concerned. Or alot more.
Again, however you want to put it. My only point is that this fight is a mismatch, just like his last fight on HBO. HBO is willing to put up with non competitive fights as long as it's the right guy taking part in them.
The deal was supposed to be that Stevenson/Kovalev fight later in the year. However Stevenson wanted a stay-busy fight first to build fight - and HBO agreed. Since they agreed to a stay-busy fight for Stevenson, they also did one for Kovalev. Why not let them both get easy KO wins to advertise the big big fight that was supposedly next, right? Well, Stevenson decided to sign with the WWE instead. HBO sees no reason to punish Kovalev by cancelling his fight, so he still gets his mismatch.
That's the thing though, HBO claimed they were done with mismatches, yet they keep doing it. At the end of the day, if people are tuning in then that's all that matters. Unfortunately, for HBO, their ratings have been stagnate.
"Fighter X vs Fighter Y don't make sense right now, it needs time to build." "Why are we getting all these mismatches!?" Anybody notice a pattern here?:think
Yeah. They made an exception because Stevenson camp demanded it, and they REALLY wanted the Kovalev/Stevenson fight. At this point, it would appear to be an error of judgement the way they went about it. But hindsight is 20/20.
They've had other mismatches too. Golovkin vs. all his recent foes(although Macklin was a credible foe), Cotto vs. Rodriguez, Kovalev vs. Shilakh. HBO used to be the premiere network for boxing in America. They've hit a rough patch lately. They need to rebound or Hershman is going to get his walking papers.
