Who was the last fighter to be hyped like GGG without even proving himself?

He walked down and annihilated a desperate-looking Macklin. It was not just his "best win". He made a pretty solid contender look like a journeyman, something both Martinez and Sturm failed to do. Does that mean he's the second coming of Jesus Christ? Of course not. But it can't be just routinely dismissed. To batter good fighters like Macklin, Proksa, and Stevens the way that he has is worthy of some hype.

He has flaws of course (anyone who thinks he beats Ward is nuts), but the guy looks spectacular against B and B+ opposition. It's a perfectly reasonable leap of logic to assume that a fighter who looks great against B+ opponents will look at least PRETTY GOOD against A level opponents, and so I'd say the hype is pretty logical and deserved.

HOLY SH*T!!! Someone actually being logical and reasonable. Good post although I would say the hype is a little too much.

 

Like to know what he's done to make u believe that? I'm not saying he isn't necessarily, I just ain't really seen much. Yea he looked quick n strong against karass. But honestly if u want to make your guy look quick who better to throw in there than karass? The slowest guy in the division with a name. By far. His biggest fight was against ol' molasses ass karass. N he's developing one of these manufactured fan bases. Keep pushin this guy at u against lame comp until u buy into it. Thanks to al haymon.

 

Golovkin has all the middleweights running from him...............Quillin, Sturn, Geale, Murray, Martinez, so he will probably have to fight Chavez, Jr. who will weight around 200 lbs., full of steroids..................

 

I like how quickly the perception changed.
Before the fight is was Golovkin's first "real test" against a "legit middleweight".
3 rounds later Macklin was a bum.

GGG is not overhyped.

 

A good point. Although that perception isn't always wrong. Just look at the recent Wilder-Scott fiasco. I think that fight told us more about Malik Scott's worth as a fighter than anything about Wilder.

All exciting fighters are hyped before they prove themselves. It all comes down to style of fighting and if hyping the fighter would be easy for promoters. A fan friendly style will always be easier and quicker to hype than other styles.

 

Yeah. A lot of organizations had Broner something like 7 or 8 on their P4P lists--The Ring, ESPN, etc. That's some hype right there. Everyone saying he was the next Mayweather. Makes GGG's hype seem tame.

 

A guy can only fight people willing to sign a contract. I don't know how long you've been following the sport, but since the land of multiple belts in boxing, all that is done is pretty much path of least resistence matchmaking. Very very few champions fighting other champions and very very few elite fighters signing contracts to fight another elite guy.

What we have instead is guys like Golovkin, fighting for a split purse of what 2 or 3 million? that makes them far too big of a risk for a small payday.

 

In fairness Bute and Lacy had won in decent world class and beaten several top 10 opponents. I know Macklin is top 10, but I do not think he is at the level of say Bika who Bute beat or Andrade for example and Juanma did beat De Leon when he was considered a force.

Its a good question as GGG is hyped on ESB and yet to beat a top name.
Possibly Hatton. He had many fights before he fought Tsyzu and was massively hyped
