It is amazing how certain top black middleweights had so many bouts in California during the 1940s. At the time, there weren't that many big money bouts taking place in the state. In other words, the top black middleweights were in virtual purgatory while based in California during the decade. It is my understanding that a bout between Charley Burley and Oakland Billy Smith had a gate of $14,060. in Oakland on April 24, 1946. That gate was exceptionally high for a bout featuring Burley or any other top black middleweight in California at the time.
