Who do you think makes a better commentator between those two?

I personally am a huge fan of Roy Jones Jr. the commentator. He can come off as being inarticulate, but if you listen to him, you see that's not the case. Extremely knowledgeable fighter, provided some of the greatest insight you'd ever hear. I frequently remember the other commentators asking him "so why are they doing that Roy?" and he'd answer with incredibly insightful replies nearly all the time, the man really knows his boxing. Another thing I like, is how he is impartial, he calls it like it is. Say where a guy like Foreman was essentially a cheerleader for guys like Trinidad and DLH, Roy never was biased as a commentator, even when he was commentating for his worst enemies, such as Hopkins. He never let personal opinions effect his commentary, and was as insightful as they come. He is someone that should have been kept around.

Edit: Additionally, if you'd like to answer the question, but add a commentator favorite of yours who isn't one of these two, feel free. Malignaggi seems to be doing a fantastic job so far. Who are some of your guys' favorite all time commentators?

I like Lennox because he was unintentionally funny often, but let's be honest: his commentary was rarely insightful. He kept saying common-sense type of stuff like "He has to stick that jab out".. or "Watch for his right hand, it's dangerous". I mean, seriously, that just doesn't cut it if that's all you have to add to the conversation.

Can't say much about RJJ as a commentator, I just remember he sometimes referenced other fighters "soft chin" which sounded quite odd coming from him. Overall, I bet he was far more insightful than Lennox.

Watch Winky Wright vs Trinidad to see how good Roy was. He literally called **** in the first 30 seconds of the fight that led to Trinidad's undoing, immediately pointing out his footwork mistakes, which continued the whole fight. He said I think it was the second round how Trinidad was only looking to knock Winky out, and he couldn't do it period, before Winky even ate any real punches to show Tito's power couldn't effect him and such. He'd frequently call out a shot some guy was trying to set up, and boom it happens for one example, dude was great.

I agree with your summation of Lennox Lewis. Crazy thing is, the dude really was VERY articulate and coherent, I liked his style. By this I mean he was laid back, but yet not boring, and could easily be understood. Too bad he stuck to the common sense aspects all the time, I think he was worried people would be confused if he got too technical? He was trying to appeal to the casual fan I suppose. Guy clearly was a boxing wizard, I wish he shared more of his technical insight. I think if he did, he'd be a brilliant commentator, because as I stated earlier, he was one of the most articulate commentators to be on there.

RJJ is by far the better commentator. Lewis was never a very articulate guy, some of his trash talking was very uncomfortable to watch and as a commentator he never really added anything that wasn't blatantly obvious to any fan.

Could you give me some specific examples of his trash talking? I'm not saying this to refute you, I am genuinely interested, as I don't recollect him doing it. Possibly it was a fight I didn't see? What did he say exactly?

Didn't Lampley provide enough of the novice insight by himself in your opinion? I see your point, it just seems like Lampley provides the charismatic, articulate novice role already? Although he wasn't so much humorous, he was more on the serious side, but extremely emotional. He most certainly could be biased though, haha. Roy Jones Jr and Lewis together would make an awesome duo, Jones for the in-depth analysis for the more knowledgeable viewer, Lewis for the comedic relief, agreed?

I've never heard anyone refer to him as boring before, but respect your opinion. He is laid back, but certainly not boring in my opinion, and he is very articulate.

My favorite moment in Lennox' commentating career was Wlad vs. Austin. For a full three minutes Lennox is lecturing about Wlad's "torpedo-like right hand", how "his right hand is something, it's like a steel hammer" which "comes shooting out like a torpedo". "Austin better watch out for that right hand"... And Wlad doesn't throw it a single time.

Then Wlad knocks out Austin with a series of left hooks, and Lennox proclaims "And that's the left hook I was telling you about!!!!"

    Classic.

Like many reactions already reveal, they both suck only Roy sucks less.
A better question would have been "who makes a slightly less dreadful commentator"

I can't think of any example of the top of my head. But he was just too softly spoken and nice and when he did try and trash talk it just seemed unnatural. The whole puglistic specialist moniker he gave himself I always found cringe worthy. I'm a big fan of his and think he's a great heavyweight champion but he always performed better in the ring than outside it.

Haha, you couldn't have phrased that any better, I seriously chuckled when reading that. I loved the "bang, bang, bang!" reference, that sequence of like a dozen bangs in a row during the Pac-Clottey fight goes down in infamy  So how about a Lennox, Foreman combo? You have Lewis to provide the most obvious commentary in the world, and Foreman to make up the dumbest ****, while being blatantly biased :rofl I remember the Hopkins-Trinidad fight, he was literally a cheerleader for Trinidad, you'd have thought Trinidad was kicking Hopkins ass if you were only listening to Foreman on say a radio. I remember in round 5 he claimed Hopkins had "used up all his legs" despite the fact Hopkins hadn't shown any remote signs of it, was dominating with his footwork, and continued to do so all fight. I remember in round 10 I believe, he thought Tito was about to land something, he gets all excited "THAT'S IT!!!!!" then Hopkins dodges everything, counters hard, and you can literally hear his spirits sink as he goes "awww, but Hopkins gets away." :rofl

I've never in my life seen a commentator as biased as him, he just came up with the most ridiculous **** ever too. I remember he claimed Griffin was benefiting from the "feint game" by Jones, and Jones knocks him out seconds later. Or how about "the referee is the most important man in the ring, besides the fighters," lmao. Just imagine a Lewis, Foreman team, my god :rofl

I have to go watch this **** right now

Thank you for that, I bet I am gonna laugh my ass off. I don't tend to watch too many Wlad fights, but I have to see this :D

Lewis is thick as a brick and Jones needs a speech therapist for enunciation.
    Both are horrid.
