No doubt in any reasonable person's mind that Toney is one of the last, truly awesome ATG boxers the world has ever seen. Truly A Class!!! If only those chicken Klit sisters hadn't ducked him.
Great post! With regards to his work ethic or lack of worth ethic, I've often asked the same question. Who knows what he'd have achieved if he'd have been as committed as Bernard. I read an article last year regarding Bernard, and it explained how he goes into restaurants and counts every calorie, even when he's not training for a fight. It told how he doesn't have sauce on his pasta, and how he once missed his Sister's wedding because he was training.
He lost to Toney for the 1st time in 1992. McCallum was born in 1956. He was 36 years old when he first lost.
Toney has a fantastic resume. But you've been harsh here, and you haven't allowed for circumstances. Roy never really had the opportunity to face the guys who Toney fought when he was at MW. Hopkins didn't go on to lose for another 12 years after Roy beat him with an injured hand. Did Roy duck Nunn out of a fear of losing? He did pursue fights at HW. Tim Littles was a very good fighter. But don't forget that Roy obviously beat Toney, and he had a very good win over Malinga. With regards to Iran Barkley, apart from when Roy was really young, they never fought in the same weight classes. Jirov was a good fighter, but it's hypocritical to praise Toney's victory over him, but not to give Roy credit for his easy win over Ruiz. Evander is a legend, but Ruiz beat him, which proves that Ruiz wasn't a complete bum. Also, a fired up Antonio Tarver was certainly a formidable challenge, factoring in Roy's circumstances at the time. :good
Hi mate, I'll try, but after thinking about it, I think I've confused two separate articles, or maybe an article and a video. The article was a few years ago, and it definitely mentioned his eating habits. I think he'd gone to lunch with Oscar for a GBP meeting. With regards to missing his sister's wedding, I have a feeling that it was Nazeem Richardson who told the tale, in the build up to one of his fights. I'll try and have a look for you though. I've also read that he runs 7 miles per day, even when he's not in camp. The guy's incredible. You've got to give him huge respect for his dedication.
Indeed. He was green when most guys are entering their primes, because of the late start to his career, being incarcerated and such. He never got any big name fights or exposure until Trinidad, when he was already 38 years old. Most of his great wins he got in his 40's, which even with his ability to defy age, it has an effect. Imagine a Hopkins who stays out of trouble, has time to develop in the amateurs before turning pro, comes into the boxing game already polished, who gets to have all the years of his prime fighting the best? Scary thought actually. Remarkable what he accomplished at an age where most guys are shot to piece, and are the stepping stones for the new generation.

I'm not sure what to rate Toney's resume but one things for certain is prime Toney could damn well fight; his skills were a thing of beauty, a proper old school fighter. Toney at 22 years of age was absolutely outstanding, skills like that at 22 is just pure mad.
