Still though, he's the one boxer non-boxing fans in the U.S. would state if asked point blank "name a boxer".

Part of me thinks he'll live a long time because after he left the scene that is when heavyweights muddle for people. There's Holyfield for a bit, then a muddle where heavyweights declined in stature, maybe some non-boxing fans know Lennox but it's not many, then another muddle where heavyweight boxing fell off the face of the earth, and then two white Ukrainian brothers ruled the roost. No boxer has captured the American imagination the way Tyson did since, Mayweather's great but in the public eye outside of the inner boxing circle he can't hold a candle to Tyson of that time period. When is Floyd Mayweather's Punch-Out! getting released? When is Floyd Mayweather going to get a cameo in Hangover?

I don't think much will change at all in the next 20 years. SRL will certainly be fine imo.

Just for clarification, you are speaking of in this forum?

I think those who break records will forever be remembered and rightly so. Tyson being so young when winning the title and also Roy J going through MW-HW will be indelible in the record books so can't see them falling much. Likewise those who look good on film, Floyd, Pac, Jones etc etc. B-hop is breaking records and so these people are fairly safe.

It's those whose achievements, though highly prized now, will surely be repeated in the next 10-20 years, who will be forgotten quickest. (I'm looking at you Andre Ward....jokes! )

Wow, he lost the Berbick, Spinks and Holmes fights? He lost against Ruddock?

Put this in perspective. Marciano, a great fighter and legend had essentially a 7 year career. Mike started in 1985 and 7 years later was going to prison. Stop his career there and he remains the stuff of legend, 40-1. He was nowhere near the fighter after his incarceration.

    Tyson, Mosely, and Jones.

Guys I think will rise in opinion in the next few decades include the Klitschko's, Clazaghe, Hopkins, and Mayweather.

Tyson though undoubtedly hugely over rated will not lose his star anytime within the next 5 decades.

It was the way in which he despatched his no more than ordinary opposition that will guarantee as much.

The longer time goes on, the more longevity as a heavyweight gets to be appreciated. The swarmers/action heroes who are thought of very highly in their time because of their excitement factor tend to see their star fade more as time goes on. Plus, heavyweights in general fall off after a period of time- there's an argument for way more than 10 guys to fill out a top 10 list, and people like seeing new names on after awhile. Louis and Ali will be glued on, but the composition of most of the rest depends largely on what people prefer at that point in time.

As far as the star swarmer dropping, it's happened with Dempsey and Frazier, and I think we'll see Tyson become the next product of that. Marciano has been shielded somewhat because he left on top and the image of him being exposed like the others simply isn't there for fans to remember. I also think Lennox, Holmes, and Holyfield have peaked as far as the esteem they're held in.

Tyson 1986-1989 best ever....the 80,s heavyweight scene is badly under rated.
