The Transnational Boxing Rankings

It's a pleasure going round-and-round with a man who knows his stuff. And yes, if we can't defend our rankings, we're just another bunch of bums in the park.

As to our rankings as "renegade" -if certain members had their way, the P4P List would look radically different. If others had their way, it would mirror most of the others. As it is, we are a collaboration, and the product reflects that. Sometimes it will look renegade, sometimes it won't. It depends on how much support proposed rankings changes or member arguments earn.

I think this is key to TBRB's validity, credibility and relevance for boxing, long may you have enough unity on your panel to discuss these issues without agenda.

I remember a quote from a former head of the British Board of Film Censorship (name escapes me), when asked of the boards 'rules' he said: We have no rules. Rules either mean you constantly battle to amend them to the current climate or you stick rigidly to them regardless of common sense.

If your team/board are renegade, that simply means you have abandoned one cause for another, a dissenter in the ranks, if you will. I think many will come to respect your sense of fair play over the 'rules and establishment' of the current bodies in boxing.

We'll see how shot he is on 31 May because he's in tough against the #1 Featherweight. That fight will almost certainly see him exit the Jr. Featherweight rankings as well, as per the charter.

 

That's a pretty loose standard for the throne...! While your angst is understandable, we don't do appointments.

 

Actually......a vacated lineal throne can only be competed when the number 1 and 2 contedners fight one another. Those two are Mayweather and Pacquaio. Since Floyd refuses to fight Pacquaio, my standard is not as loose as you are suggesting :huh I am trolling suggesting he should be lineal but a strong argument can be made for him to be number 1. Look at the recent respective welter resumes. Bradley > Maidana. Marquez > Khan.

 

I guess you didn't see how a past his prime Vic Darchinyan was beating him up until the stoppage :huh

 

There should be just one plain standings like Baseball and Basketball so we are all on the same page!

Some constructive criticism: if you want these rankings to become more accepted as neutral and fair on a global level, your pool of voters is way too anglocentric. I understand why they're anglocentric because most of the voters likely only communicate in English, but Germany for instance is an important boxing market nowadays and you have no German voters from what I read but more than half of the voters come from the U.S. and Britain. Even some of the voters in more exotic locations are really foreigners living abroad as opposed to someone from there. Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia are greatly underrepresented in the electorate.

Also, for writing profiles on guys, saying "he hosts a podcast" is not a good resume for a voter. I can host a podcast on boxing, there's no intelligence or ability test for it, does that make me any better than some random hack on a message board?

To the rankings themselves, it seems you decide on a top 10 by arguing for a consensus. Why not do it like say the AP poll for college sports and do it by votes showing the votes fighters get?

We're doing everything possible to reach out around the globe. If you have emails of good candidates who are Germans, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian, Chinese, etc., don't hesitate to PM me!

Also, try to find a ratings body in history that is more representative than we are.

We have 14 countries represented as well as a commonwealth in Puerto Rico. We'd like 30. But it isn't easy.

Resume is important, but we're not utter snobs, man. A member with a podcast who follows fights like an obsessive nut can indeed be a worthy addition. I cringe every time I read my bio -it looks like I think I'm something because I'm a part of all these organizations.

That has been done before, was considered here, and was rejected. When you get 20, 30, 40 knowledgeable guys and gals examining loose proposals for rankings changes every week and they weigh-in with agreement, argument, and alternatives, you get better rankings. I've changed my mind probably 15 times -based on input from other members -input I would not have been privy too had just logged-on and submitted a checklist.

Many minds are better than one and boxing is more of a subjective sport than most.

 

Flyin Ryan, be happy. Argentina is now represented; that makes 15 countries, a commonwealth, and five continents.
