Even before the attack there was cause for alarm where Nevin's pro career is concerned. He was rat **** in his debut. I wouldn't go hanging any hopes on him.

That said, there are plenty of respectable Irish boxers and some nice amateurs in the pipeline.

Watch his WSB fights he was one of the top lads in that lost very few against top ams and the ones he lost were questionable and away from home.

 

I know that mate, and was excitedly anticipating his debut for some time, but some kids just aren't cut out for the leap (even though WSB is semi-pro and he seemed to have a style that would be suited to a transition) and in his debut he proved not to be, and that impression will take some undoing.

I almost had a hard time believing it was the same John Joe Nevin from the amateurs that always looked so brilliant. His battle with Candelaria was among the sloppiest and uninspiring debuts I've ever seen from a top amateur.

if you look at countries by population the only country with a smaller population that does better than ireland in the pros is Puerto Rico and there no country that does better in the amatuers that has a population near Irelands population
