I remember seeing that fight closed circuit in the UK. On the Mugabi Hagler fight. Poor Sandoval nearly died..pretty scary.

Barbados Joe Walcott had to go to ridiculous lengths to make weight against Kid Lavigne.

He was shoveling coal in the boiler room of a paddle steamer, wearing oil skins shortly before the fight.

It's really impossible to define "weight drained".

Some of the best fighters have struggled their entire careers to make weight.
A lot of the old-timers wouldn't drink water a day before the fight, just suck on an ice cube or two if that. Dunno if water really makes a difference. I mean, I dont know if restricting water makes you lose weight. I guess boxers know.

Old-timers, even heavyweights, used to do this.

Carmen Basilio at 147, Jake LaMotta at 160 and lower. These guys were always struggling down to weight. Eusebio Pedroza.
Damn near every decent disciplined boxer is perhaps "drained" to some extent.

Funny how some people here call it their "natural" weight division when it's usually the one they drained down to the most.

I agree with this. But don't you think that he was a bit tight at the weight? In the same way that Jones was at MW, maybe the camp wasn't geared towards the victory as much as the weight?

This is not the same as weight drained, but it can become a factor, especially in a hard 15 rounder.

..............Around that time, Sandoval was routinely weighing in for non-title fights around 130. He just couldn't pare down to 118. He looked like a zombie in that fight, and almost died as a result of the punishment Canizales dished out.

I don't see why, as I think Hearns was at his most dominant at 147, so I don't really think that applies in this case. And again, if it didn't show in his fights, why bring it up? Jones didn't seem too tight, just a bit pre-prime at 160.

disagree, leonard beat a prime version of hearns. hearns wasnt weight drained, weight drained fighters DO NOT weigh in 2lb under the limit.

Correct. Hearns actually came out at the start of the 14th round, after he was hurt in the previous round, with a bounce and was getting off with punches. It's the photo image in everyones mind of Hearns sagging into the ropes with Leonard all over him which gives the impression he was tired and weight drained.

He only looked tired in rounds 13 and 14 because Leonard's fists made him look that way.
