Not sure if this is what you mean but my uncle was an amateur fighter and then a coach and he used to take his son (my cousin), who I massively looked up to, training. I was about 8 at the time and I started going with them. I,m still training and fighting 27 years later.
Yeah, there is no right or wrong answer. Interesting to hear why people come here and are so into boxing. I'll tell one funny story. When I was in high school, my dad and I would get out and box. He boxed in the Navy. He was about 6'2", 200. In high school I was probably 6'4", 175. Thought I was fairly tough. So we are sparring and I am tagging him with a jab. Bloodied his lip. He's not doing much. I throw another jab and WHACK! he puts me on my back with a left hook. Never saw it. He was just setting me up.
Honest question. If Floyd retired and went out of the limelight, would you watch boxing anymore? And why are you such a fan of Floyd in the first place, was he the first fighter you watched?
Started watching when I was little and my dad had recorded a bunch of legendary nights. So watched those over and over. Just stuck with it ever since.
I care about my health and I'm here because of Mayweather. I admire a fighter who care about his health.
He thought it was important I knew how to defend myself. I would be surprised if it was unique. I would imagine a fair number of people on these threads had similar experiences, where their dad taught them to box. Funny thing is, I would say wrestling proved to be the most valuable sport, in terms of defending myself. Have been in a couple of encounters, where a guy who was drunk in a bar, tried to tackle me and I was able to parry it and hold the guy down, before someone broke it up. Never let a guy take you down to ground and pound, especially if they are bigger.
Good story. I was going on and off over the years, and my uncle started taking his grandson. The kid was going for a few years and I thought I would see how good he was getting. He only ended up breaking my rib he's 16 for f**k sake. My own fault I was out of breath leaning on the ropes and he threw a shot around my guard. While I was on the floor in agony he was walking round the gym laughing and asking his mates if they saw the shot.
theres just nothing like walking into a big venue for a big prizefight...and the feeling that anything could happen.....like walking into the garden for cotto/mosley.....or making the walk from the sportsbook, drunk, to the grand garden arena.....going to pac/hatton...man the whole kentucky derby weekend...the atmosphere...it cant be beat....
That's rough. Never had a broken rib but I hear it is VERY painful. Where is the respect from the young man? Walking around the gym laughing? He should have been helping you up.
The worst thing about the broken rib is the fact its painful when you lie down, sit up, walk, stand, talk, laugh, breath. Theres no let up. I'm just waiting for my young cousin to be old and then its revenge time unfortunately I'll be in my 60's.
