This series is about fights that weren't completely blowout but weren't really close, and I will explain how the losers of the fights could of fought a lot better to make it more competitive or even win it.

Antonio Margarito's first mistake when facing Cotto in the rematch came from his training camp, Margarito came in way too fat for a fight were he is the pressure fighter, this affected him negatively because he was very slow on his feet therefore making him ineffective in walking Cotto down, letting Cotto just dance around him for a lot of the fight because Margarito didn't know how to cut off the rings (In the lighter weights he was too big and just quick enough to walk opponents down with a great chin).

Another thing I thought Margarito could of done better is jabbing Cotto's body, a tactic Manny Pacquiao abused against him when Cotto became stationary on the ropes because Cotto loves to block straight punches away with his gloves and drops his hands when you throw a straight to the body (Something Adrien Broner does a lot too) leaving him open for straight right hands which open up the rest of combinations. Margarito's footwork was also horrendous rendering him open to Cotto's slip of the jab and throwing the left hook while circling left ( Something Felix Trinidad was a master at doing along with a couple of other Puerto Ricans).

Now Margarito threw a beautiful jab expect when he thew it in a lazzy fashion but when he doubled the jab he didn't follow of to the body like he should of early on in the fight because of how quickly Cotto was moving away and because of Cotto's known Stamina problems, he did start doing it after round 5 but it was starting to get late because his eye was broken down. The last bad thing I thought Margarito did really bad was put his right foot parallel to his left (Squaring up his feet) because it allowed Cotto to get more leverage on his left hooks and a better angle.

Even if Margarito had done this things throughout the fight I still believed he would of lost because the vision in his right eye just wasn't good enough to hold up.

Margarito wasn't close in a single round, dude...

What could he have done differently?

Load his gloves; if he wanted the same results of the first fight.

There was nothing Margarato could do, either suddenly acquire some boxing skills he never had just in time for the Cotto rematch or load gloves his again. He looked pathetic in his showings against an old man Mosley, a midget, and a previous victim because he got to where he was at artificially, he never belonged at that level, and when the pads came off it showed.

It's actually better than it should've been, Shane was told by Nasim that he found something in his gloves but he instructed him to act as though he didn't. So Shane was giving him too much respect early, once Shane realized Maragato could not hurt him it was bombs away, Shane probably could've gotten him out of there earlier had not been apprehensive early.

It's amazing what a zombie tony turned into after he was caught. He looked nothing like he did in 05-08

Actually, it would have been a good idea to defend his right eye from the beginning to ensure he was there for the later rounds when he would put the serious heat on. Everybody was talking about Tony's eye before the fight... so it's not like it was a huge surprise when the fight was stopped because of it.

Of course, there's always a chance he did try his best to defend his eye and just wasn't successful...

Tony's almost too tough for his own good. Because few punches hurt him, he just kept eating them, not taking into consideration the damage they were doing to his eye.

    Agreed.

    Agreed.

Defense was obviously never a strength. But his ability to absorb punishment was epic. (Whatever you may think of his abilities in relation to the loaded gloves scandal, that can't be taken away.) That eye just wasn't able to hold up to the punishment like the rest of his head.

What could have been done different in this fight would have had to occur in the Pacquiao-Margarito fight, and that would have been to stop the fight before his eye had been damaged past the point of full recovery.

Ya he was tough as hell and freakishly large for his weight. He dwarfs cotto in the ring and not just in regards to height. People devalue him because of the wraps and getting ko'd by Mosley, but even without the wraps he could have still been a top competitor due to his size, toughness, and relentlessness. the guy doesn't stop coming forward.

Disagree, that chin would've withered away long before he had ever reached this level without the wraps. Look how many fights he lasted after the wraps came off, 4. With three of the four having serious consequences, one a KO, one after which he need eye repair, and one a career ending TKO. Once those wraps started turning the tide for him, he didn't deal with nearly as much as he would've have without them.

He spent more time and worry having to chase his opponents down after his wraps hardened than he did being hit by them. No opponent could chance taking their time to sit down on their punches for fear of just being touched by Margarato's gloves, and that saved his skull just as seen when drawing the comparison of with and without plaster.

It was fortunate for Cotto that that eye was softened up. But lucky? He dominated Margarito in the 2nd fight. I think people are confusing Margarito's relentless advance(of which there was much), and success(of which there was very little).

There will always be shadows cast over the 1st fight, true or not. And there will always be questions about both fights, because of the wraps scandal, and the preexisting eye damage.
