Watched HBO's coverage and it was far superior to the usual Watt drivel. For the record they gave GG the first 4 rounds, but Froch started to gain initiative by going to the body from the fifth as GG tired.
Didn't have a problem with what he was actually saying but I did think he was saying it too much and too often. He overshadowed the other 2 commentators.
Ruined the fight for me. Was incredibly bias towards Froch, I couldn't understand it. Groves didn't fight the same way he did in the first fight but he was still boxing well and winning rounds, look at hbo's cards.
Was cringing when they were trying to excuse the Degale stoppage to Malignaggi, utterly ridiculous. And Watt needs to stop repeating his phrases 2 or 3 times a round, its getting ridiculous. (For the record I think Degale was deffo stopping him but once again a British ref is over zealous and puts an asterisk next to the win as far as the rest of the world is concerned) As for the Froch/Groves fight. Dont know if Jim was conscious of how bias he was in his commentary in the first fight and was over compensating or if he just sees the fights with **** in his eyes. He went from over crediting Groves to giving him nothing. He seems to give far too much credence to holding the centre of the ring, so god knows how he'd call a Mayweather fight!
Amir Khan had it right. Sky are so biased, the whole team, Ed Robinson leading in with questions trying to put words in Amirs mouth. He had the fight summarized well. It was refreshing to hear. Nick Halling is the worst commentator ever, hangs onto Watts every word and rephrases it, it would be like me commentating on show jumping or something. Clueless!
There sounded like there was tension in the air with Pauly has well , Pauly was good spoke sence and spoke when he had to . Watt seems to me like he likes the sound of his own voice that much , that he talks with out thinking , certainly talks rubbish , and biassed rubbish at that , I think he forgets what he says has well , round one ,,,, Frochs looking good , round 2 Frochs looking bad , can't never seem to make his mind up , Notice how he calls punches that have not happenned
It was so funny how arrogant Sky were, Amir are you sure you don't mean Froch? "No, Groves is controlling it..." "Well, he must be watching a different fight to us!" atsch Everytime Froch got hit, Watt had an excuse. Froch was twisting away, going backwards, thinking about his gilfriend or some other reason why the punch or multiple punches basically didn't happen and shouldn't be scored. Meanwhile all the paise in the world for Froch's jab that Groves "couldn't handle". He was flicking that out like he was trying to get some flies away from his soup.
It's cringey. Watt in the commentary in the 1st fight was Groves this Groves that and rightly so IMO, then all of a sudden he fancied Froch to win the rematch. On what basis 1 might ask when he was so Pro Groves in the 1st fight. Puppets on a string these sky commentators.
For me, Watt's problem is he always goes too far one way - there's just no balance in his analysis. Once he's made a decision on how he thinks the fight will go, he's all in on that fighter. That then has a massive effect on the casual viewer / media view of how a fight went. He went too heavy on Groves in the first fight and too heavy on Froch in the 2nd. Froch won decisively in the end, but to suggest he was cruising and had the fight well under control throughout is just wrong. There were 8 close rounds and while I had Groves up by 2, I wasn't surprised to see the judges split. I've listened to TalkSport at work this morning and one minute Alan Brazil and Johnny Vaughan are moaning about how annoying it is that a major boxing match like this creates a load of new experts who've just watched their first fight. A minute later they're laying into Amir Khan for his scores. Idiots. What they obviously haven't picked up on is their boxing expert Gareth Davies actually had Groves up by a couple too at the stoppage and it's a clear example of commentary how a fight and fighters are viewed.
So yet again we are dicussiing how a commentator views a fight! IMO Froch was in full control of the fight.
He also ruined the fight for me. He also ruined some of the fights before the main event. Being fully serious what is the best way not to let it happen again? petition, mass letter of complaint? At the end of the day it cost £16 and I as well as others here wanted to mute the TV. Its not even the first time its happened. Paulie was so sooo much better.
