Floyd doesn't even have an opponent lined up yet. I think he's waiting to see how Cotto does with Martinez. Unless Floyd gets a big name opponent - Alvarez/Cotto/Pacquiao I see Chavez-Froch bumping him off the date.

Froch-Chavez doesn't need to sell a million ppv's in order for it to be succesful, where a Mayweather ppv has sooooo much overhead with Floyd's guarantee, for him to go head to head with Froch-Chavez using another Maidana/Guerrero level oppoenent is a sure fail.

The Mayweather show is a big deal, but the overhead kills it with strong head to head competition. Just think, with a Froch-Chavez media blitz, that means GB/CBS have to invest that much more in advertising in order keep their message strong.

 

Also Arum won't be doing business with MGM in the near future. So he see's this as two bird one stone.

 

Speaking of - Arum is on very good terms with Sheldon Adelson, who, both as quid pro quo for bringing more business to Macao and to get British high rollers into Vegas for Froch , would likely offer high enough site fees to eliminate the possibility that Arum actually lost money.

In fact, getting Sheldon's backing for a Sept 13 date may well be what prompted Arum to consider it in the first place.

 

I know Arum's found of the Thomas & Mack Center, but he did meniton going across the street to the Venetian during his MGM tirade. Question is how many seats can they fit for an event?

I would be shocked if there were two ppv cards on one date. I'd guess if Mayweather wants the Sept 13 date, which I think he does, he gets it and everyone else backs off. Too much money gets lost in a dueling card scenario.

I think the cable/satellite providers put a lot of pressure on the promoters last time this happened with Martinez-Chavez vs Alvarez-Lopez. Same thing would happen here.

 

Fans who tuned in to watch Chavez against Martinez will tune in to watch him even if Mayweather is fighting the same day. Mayweather will not affect chavez PPV numbers. It might affect mayweathers number however.

 

In North America, I definitely agree that twitter followers are a good indication of how popular a baller, boxer or other celebrity is. And that its a good gauge for how an event will do. But in other parts of the world it just isn't. Our cultures are totally different. You'd be hard pressed to find someone glued to their phone in Colombia, or even in a major economic city like Panama City where there are a ton of international business people. Look at boca juniors twitter, they don't even have a million followers but that stadium is rammed every time and raucous. The froch fight had 80000 fans and he made over 10 mil usd and has less than half a mil followers on twitter. My point is, internationally, twitter is no indication of how much of a following someone has. If that was the case the froch fight would have bombed and so would have the maravilla fight in Argentina.

Chavez' twitter following is no indication of the type of fan base he has and he would do good numbers on that weekend, especially against a guy like froch who just had a spectacular ko.

 

I doubt froch will fight in 90 days again, I think this fight will happen but later in the fall like October or December, Because Pacquiao on PPV in November.

Oh I tend to agree with your point. Also, internationally there are various other social services and sites as well that compete with the ones most known to US folks.

Of course PPV figures discussed are US only, which is why US social media was a relevant topic.

Though in terms of analyzing the total financials of a competing event, you are certainly correct to point out the relative situation on social media. Because big money would be coming in from Sky Box Office PPV, mostly to Froch and Mexican TV Rights and sponsorships going to Chavez. Plus gate and/or site revenue. Because thousands would be flying in from Mexico and the UK.

Even if the US PPV flopped (it wouldnt) each fighters respective following would certainly be sufficient to make it a successful event in my view.
