Why do people have such a hard time grasping that boxing is a business?

This always makes me go- :patsch

Eddie Hearn and Carl Froch have been getting criticised for looking to make a Julio Cesar Chavez fight as opposed to an Andre Ward fight.

Put yourself in Carl Froch shoes for a moment. He's 36 years old, maybe has 2 fights left, has a family to take care of and should be looking for an exit route out of boxing at this stage to secure himself and his family in the future.

Let's compare what fights with Ward and Chavez Jr bring to the table.

    Ward:
-Would likely have to take place in Ward's home town in a small venue.
    - Has a very small fanbase.
    - Very difficult to negotiate with and has previously stated will only fight Froch in a rematch if he earns a larger cut than Froch.
    - Does poor TV ratings
    - Fight would not take place on PPV in the US and if did take place on PPV in the UK wouldn't do big numbers as would take place in the early hours and Ward does not have personality enough to sell out his own living room.
    - No doubt a very tough fight but an extremely ugly style and would likely cause Froch's fanbase to shrink rather than grow.
-Proness to injuries have caused fight delays.

    Chavez Jr:
    - Would take place in the bright lights of Las Vegas and sell out large arenas.
    - Has a rapid fanbase.
    - Will likely be happy to offer a minimum of a 50/50 split.
    - Does great TV ratings.
    - Fight would be on PPV in the US, UK and Mexico and has drawing power as son of a legend.
    - Entirely winnable and entertaining fight.

Froch will earn a bucket load more for fighting Chavez than Ward. So if anyone says they would fight Ward in Froch's position rather than Jr is a liar.

I'm a Ward fan and would root for Ward should he fight Froch. But even I can't blame Froch for wanting to cash out against Chavez Jr. It's a no brainer, we have no idea at all when Ward will fight again, it's pointless to even entertain an idea of a rematch until Ward's legal issues have been resolved. For all we know Froch may very will be retired by the time we see Ward in the ring again.

Boxing is a business. As much as I hate it and I wished that the best fighters should be rewarded accordingly and receive greater fan support that's just simply not the reality of the situation.

People only say it is or is not a business when it coincides with their agenda. For example: I like fighter A, he's not fighting fighter B, but I am cool with it because it's just business and I understand the business. I don't like fighter C, he isn't fighting fighter A, I am mad and say the best should fight the best and fighter C is ducking, completely disregarding the business decisions.

    I'm guilty of it.

Of course Froch would rather fight Chavez Jr than Ward ..The reward is higher with a lesser risk of a loss !

Froch should WANT TO fight Ward out of sheer pride. That is unless he can live with the fact that Ward dismantled him with one hand. Carl has plenty of money and wouldn't have to work again if he quit today, so the cash out talk is bull****. Hearn and Froch realize Ward beats him again and with two fights left why lose one of them? Instead of trying to discredit Ward, Froch and company should just admit they can't see a victory and move on.

But I try to look at it as a business because that's what it is. You can't blame the fighters or promoters. The fans put the money in their pockets, and money talks more than the vocal minority online.

Take Stevenson and Kovalev. It sure as hell looks like Stevenson ducked, and he probably did. But HBO had the opportunity to offer him more and chose not to. So what would you do? Fight Hopkins, less risk, for $10 million or fight Kovalev, high risk, for $5 million? I'm betting everyone that cried he ducked would choose the higher amount.

These fighters are trying to secure their families. TV networks don't want to invest in boxers that aren't going to bring in viewers. Like Rigo, one of the best IMO, or Ward, and neither can sell. They're the best but they are bad for business. It's the fans' fault, not the promoters or TV networks. If people paid to see Rigo, he'd be all over TV getting all kinds of fights.

I guarantee you if Pacquiao OR Mayweather had been selling only 300k PPVs and the other 1.5 million PPVs, that fight would be made in a heartbeat. Since they're almost so even, neither side wants to budge, especially the A side (depending on when you ask and who you ask).

Froth does WANT to fight Ward- it has been pushed for several times by him. If Ward said to Froch I will come to England and fight you for a 55/45 split in your favor being you are the ticket / ppv seller, the fight would happen. But Froch has his future and family to think of at this stage of his career and shouldn't be fighting for chump change in Oakland being that Ward needs Froch for a RELEVANT fight more than Froch needs him. As he needs the likes of Stevenson, Kovalev, Hopkins, Golovkin etc.

Ward needs to realise he has very little box office appeal.

If Lara beats Canelo in a similar fight to Rigondeaux -Donaire, will Mayweather fight him? No. And it's not because Mayweather won't beat him, it's because Lara, like Rigo, can't sell out his own living room. Boxing is a business.

Didn't Froch get several million for Groves last weekend? I'm not in Carl's pockets, but I'm pretty sure he can quit fighting TODAY and live comfortably and take care of his family for the long run. It isn't about who's a bigger draw, where the fight is, etc.. At least it shouldn't be. It's about one grown man being ok with the fact that another grown man out there beat his ass. If Carl is ok with that, then whatever, I'm just saying as a competitor who just made several miilion dollars, why would any of that get in front of your PRIDE as a man and as a "warrior", especially if you have 2 fights left or whatever it is.

It's silly, Froch doesn't think he can win, plain and simple, so he's making a business decision to not lose in one of his last few fights. That's fine, but just come out and say that in a round about way instead of discrediting a guy that tamed you. I don't know where you got your info of a rematch being pushed, but from what I've read Hearn hasn't picked up the phone to call Ward. It seems like Team Froch is content to assume what Ward will or won't demand. Bottomline if Carl wanted the fight, Hearn would make attempt to make it, point blank, period!!!

Also, Lara didn't already beat the **** out of Floyd! So that's a terrible analogy.
